I was under the impression that the G1 did have push email via IMAP Idle. It connects to gmail and maintians an open, idle, connection. That way messages can be "pushed" to you. In fact some of the reviews I've read state that emails showed up on the G1 faster than the web interface via PC. I do know that google push works on PC because I have it on my windows pc and MacBook via Mail.app.

Thats what I was told as well but after sending a bunch of emails to test it out I found that some emails we're showing up in under a minute and others it was taking anywhere from 5-15 minutes and well after they would show up online. There is suppose to be an OTA update pushed out to all T-Mobile G1 devices to fix some bugs and push out new features. If what I am experiencing is a bug, hopefully it will be fixed with this update.

Little bit of both

I find that every time I use a Standard device there are times where I think this'd be so much faster if I could just tap (whatever element is so many keypresses away)

I use both Pro (HTC TyTN2) and Std (HTC S730) devices daily, and I do agree with the OP that sometimes it is just silly with having the need to use a stylus to get something done but then again sometimes it is easier to just tap instead of pressing buttons to get things done.

For example on a touchscreen device I would need the stylus to navigate WMP but on standard the keypad can do it all. why not have that same functionality on pro version as well? In pro you can create and edit office files but on std it is limited to edit, std should be able to create as well. In std you get profiles but this is not found on pro. it'd be nice to see panel interface from wm6.1 std brought over to the pro's today screen...

I think it is time for MS to merge them and re-design the UI to make it more intuitive. This way it can be more appealing to a lot more people.

Hopefully by merging the 2 we get a lot more options in terms of getting things done either via keypress or touch or both.

Developers need to code for only 1 platform

Manufacturers need to design for 1 platform

and MS needs to support only 1 OS...

I think the G1 is still immature for my needs and of course it is not available here in Asia yet, I don't even consider the Touch Diamond because it has no expansion slot or physical keyboard however I always play with it in the shop I visit... it's just so small and that screen is so drool worthy...

Yeah, I didn't think forking an already stagnated seeming project seemed wise, if they couldn't fix things all these years on pro, what was the need for standard (from a viewpoint of now they've got two OSes to ignore)

Completely agree. I've been using Windows Mobile Pro-based devices for years since the Windows CE days, and I personally think Pro is far better than WinMo Standard Edition in terms of touch-screen use & overall features, but Standard is easier to learn and use for the average person.

I purchased a Samsung Blackjack back when it came out and would have pulled my hair out if I wasn't balled lol. I remembered thinking there was a lot functionality that I missed going from Pro to Standard, and couldn't fathom moving to Standard Edition completely. But for my clients who were used to basic cell phones, the Blackjack was fine for them. They didn't what they were missing The Blackjack met eBay after 1 week of pure torture learning the more basic Standard edition.

I think it's great that providers are finally customizing the basic Windows Mobile Pro interface, but I think there should just be one standard. I'm patiently waiting to see what Windows Mobile 7 will do to merge the two platforms, and sure hope they don't take away features that Pro has. Microsoft has been on a roll moving backwards in overall usability/interfaces and removing features that I used frequently in previous versions of Windows Mobile. I could go off a bit but I'll bite my tongue now.

Are you calling me average!?!??!

I completely agree with you. If I wasn't already trained in the art of using Windows Mobile Standard, I would have never known any better when using the HTC Touch Diamond. However after spending years training myself to use WM with one hand, it was just impossible to get the hang of the Pro.

One thing I do like about the T-Mobile G1 is that even though it is touch based, I mostly use it with one hand since everything is so large and easy to hit. Now if only they can do something about those smudges. I hate smudges!
