"Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today launched a Kindle Store optimized for the Safari Web browser on iPhone. Now when users of the Kindle for iPhone app click on "Get Books," the new Kindle Store tailored for the size and shape of the iPhone and iPod touch screens automatically opens in Safari. This optimized Kindle store offers iPhone and iPod touch app users quick and easy access to the Kindle Store's 280,000 books, including 106 of 112 New York Times Best Sellers and most New Releases that are available for $9.99 or less."
The only knock I had on the Kindle App was that it didn't have a good mechanism for getting content onto the app; you had to browse the store through Safari and an interface that was anything but intuitive. Now, however, things are much easier and Amazon, as usual, did a hell of a job on the UI (it's very similar to their iPhone version of the web site). Basically, if you can live with reading books on the small screen, the iPhone could replace the Kindle if you wanted to (I don't, but it's a decent companion; no one can have my Kindle. Ever!).

I don't have a Kindle. I'm trying to decide if Kindle for iPhone is good enough. So far, I haven't bought any books. I've only downloaded a couple of books that were free for a limited time.

I, too, am Kindleless, but I'm strongly considering a DX (?) with the big screen. Most of my reading is journal articles that need the larger screen. Which, of course makes the 3.5" screen of the iPhone/iPod Touch quite unworkable. That, and the battery life of, what, an hour (at least with the Touch). Also, after only a few minutes of reading, I end up with a headache. Anyway, I could see this as a secondary device to read sitting on the potty, standing in line, or slouching in a waiting room. Does this software do anything cool like synchronize your current location between devices? Or at least synchronize bookmarks? That would make it considerably more feasible to consider keeping the iVersion as a secondary/backup viewer.

It does actually sync your locations across both devices, which is my favorite feature and I believe it does sync bookmarks also. That's why I've taken to using the iPhone as a backup.

I like the Kindle iPhone app well enough. I bought one thriller, but have mostly been reading free books. The real Kindle isn't for me, but I'll probably be buying more Kindle books for iPhone. Glad to finally see an iPhone-optimized Kindle store.

Sweet! That does make it that much more desirable. Now I just need to self-justify (and wife-justify) spending $500 on an electronic piece of paper...
