Default Rumor: QuickTime Pro to Go Away?

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/02/09...n-snow-leopard/

"In the latest Snow Leopard builds, however, all features are reported to be fully enabled. In addition, the "Buy QuickTime Pro" and "Registration" links have been completely eliminated as menu options and the registration control panel also removed from the System Preferences. These changes suggest that Apple may finally be incorporating all the Pro features into the standard QuickTime installation."

It's amazing the way rumors get reported.  Wouldn't it stand to reason that Apple enabled the Pro features of QuickTime in test builds of Snow Leopard so that they could be tested, rather than because they were planning on making Pro free?  Does anyone in the blogosphere look at this stuff critically rather than assumptively?

Nice link to go with this story: A Consumer’s Guide to Apple Rumors. It's Harry McCracken, but I still think he was dead-on.

I don't think that many in the blogosphere think about rumors critically. At least, not those who get picked up and sent around. To be honest, if I wrote on my blog that Apple enabled Quicktime Pro features to be tested, no one would notice. Write that it's included in Snow Leopard, and it'll make the rounds faster than that "Bill Gates is testing an email tracking program and will pay you $1000 for every person you forward this to" email.

Wait; you mean he isn't?
