Default iPhone Software v. 2.2 Available Now

http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

"What's in this update:

Enhancements to Maps
Google Street View; Public transit and walking directions; Display address of dropped pins; Share location via email; Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls.

Enhancements to Mail
Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email; Improved formatting of wide HTML email.

Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network); Improved stability and performance of Safari; Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages; Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen; Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings."

Well, let's be honest.  None of this is going to be disruptive, massive, or huge, but it is welcome.  I imagine there's more under the hood than above it in this case, and sorry folks, but still no copy and paste.  Overall this update is meh-riffic and looks more like an update to Google Maps than the entire OS, but then again, it's only a point-release.  I'm doing the upgrade now and will have more to report on after I use it a bit throughout the day.  Hopefully it'll be more impressive in real life than it is on paper.

Thumbs up Mail improvements are welcome

I successfully updated a deactivated AT&T iPhone 2G from 2.1 to 2.2 using “Update” button from iTunes 8.0.1 I just kept my 2G iPhone (to use as an iPod Touch+) when I upgraded to the 3G. It still has the original AT&T SIM card in there (it’s just deactivated and I keep the phone in Airplane mode with WiFi on since I don’t use it as a phone). It’s never been Pwned or jailbroken or unlocked. I wasn’t sure what would happen on the upgrade (whether it would get stuck pending activation), but it went ok. It popped up an activation message saying activation would take some time, but I dismissed it and it let me use my device.

(I also updated my wife’s 2G iPhone and my iPhone 3G as well, but neither one is jailbroken or unlocked.)

I like the improved handling of wide HTML messages in Mail. Messages that previously were only legible by zooming in and scrolling each line left to right now properly wrap the text. Here's a screenshot of a problematic email with 2.1 that now displays correctly in 2.2

This is probably the most underwhelming release I've seen. All of the 3G releases are going to be point releases - this should have been a point-point release. I'll pass until they start addressing some of the real issues (copy/paste, tasks support, notes sync, etc.). Plus, I hear they've mucked up jailbroken software, so who knows when it will be available for v2.2. Jailbreaking makes this phone much mo' better.

Knowing Apple, the earliest time you might see a major update would be MWSF in January. I'd be really surprised to see any major updates that don't coincide with an Apple event.

And, to be honest, the next major thing that's essentially confirmed on their roadmap is the Push Notification Service. That has to come soon -- it's getting embarrassingly late.

Double triple and quadruple agreed.

I'll sit back and be happy with my 2.1 (jailbroken/unlocked) for now. I've found that 2.1 overall, is extremely stable, Safari stability could be improved a bit, but 2.2 isn't worth the effort go through the upgrade process for me (plus jailbreak/unlock isn't released yet so I'm stuck with 2.1 anyway).

I can live with no MMS, and I can live with not being able to create and edit docs, but for God's sake why in the name of all that is holy and unholy do we not have copy and paste yet? It is an utter pain in the butt that this is missing.

I have to say that I've had both iPhones and I can count on one hand the number of times I really missed copy and paste. I have a feeling I'm not the only one.

I'm not saying they shouldn't do it; in fact I think they should and the sooner the better, but in reality, I'm not losing any sleep over copy and paste functionality.

It took a while, and I got through it eventually, but entering a 63 character WPA pre-shared key with mixed case alpha, numerals and punctuation would truly have been far easier if I could have used copy and paste.
