Default iPhone 3.0: What Was Missing

"Now that we know what Apple announced on Tuesday at its iPhone OS 3.0 preview event, it's time to go over what wasn't announced. Between escalating rumors, increased competition, and good ol' fashioned feature requests, Apple didn't quite satisfy everyone's appetites. The following is an exploration of what is still missing from iPhone OS 3.0 that some would still like to see."

David Chartier has a record of being accurate, smart, and even-thinking when it comes to Apple, and this time is no different.  I dig his list of features and agree that some of them would've been nice.  Overall 3.0 is a great upgrade, but it isn't perfect.  Read David's thoughts and then come share your own below.  I have a feeling most of us are going to be in agreement with him.

It is funny to me that the fundamental issues with the phone's OS are missed in this. To "overlook" background processing in favor of adding a video section to the store or to do sync is nutty. To me, all of these missing features are trivial with the exception of the plug-in/runtime support issue (which includes flash). Unified messaging is also not trivial only because they don't allow background apps (since otherwise some smart developers would long since have delivered something good).

What's missing is a frakking tablet to run it on If they don't at least announce one this year I'm . . . GGRRRR. And no I don't want Apple to do a NetBook. Or at least like the existing ones. None of this flip and rotate the screen down over the keyboard crap. Make the tablet display detachable. I have issues

My top "wants" for the next OS:

- Elegant multitasking
- Less intrusive incoming calls and reminders
- Pull down the menu bar to expose features/reminders/search/etc.
- More info on the Lock screen

A lot of this I've already accomplished with jailbreaking, but it would be nice if some of these things were "Apple-approved".

A Cintiq could probably tide you over in the meantime.

The Cintiq is ridiculously large.

I agree regarding the tablet. What I *hope* to see from Apple is a slate upgrade for my Touch, with a screen between 8" and 10" and about 1/4" to 3/8" think and no more than 1.5 lbs.

Something with a desktop stand and bluetooth external keyboard would be ducky...
