"Despite warnings from AT&T that claimed high demand for the new iPhone 3G S would prevent it from shipping pre-orders by the June 19 launch date, Apple is still promising to satisfy all web pre-orders with a Friday delivery. The Boy Genius Report cited internal sources at AT&T as saying that customers who had not ordered the new phone by June 15 would have to wait one to two weeks after the launch to receive their order or stand in line to buy one. While availability of the new iPhone at AT&T stores is still uncertain, there appears to be no shortage on Apple's side. The company's website continues to take pre-orders for the product without reservation, informing users that their new phone will be shipped to arrive on time on the 19th, with free shipping to boot."
Not that I doubted mine would make it here, but this is definitely reassuring. I always find it funny how, year after year, AT&T runs out of phones so quickly while Apple always has ample supply, to the point that they're even allowing online ordering this time around.
Anyway, what's your pre-order situation? Did you? From Apple or AT&T? Did you get your shipping confirmation yet?
I pre-ordered mine the day after WWDC from Apple, but I haven't gotten my "it's coming" e-mail yet.

Having just bought a 3G in April, I'm not likely to get a 3GS right now. However, if I were to get one, I sure wouldn't buy it from AT&T. I went to the Apple store to get my 3G, and I would get a 3GS from Apple too.

Sigh. Okay, so I have to eat some crow and admit that I am actually getting a 3GS. I got two Palm Pre's for my wife and I on Saturday and I LOVED them. My only concern was that they seemed a bit delicate, but otherwise, wow, a true iPhone competitor! However, Sprint, as I feared, sucked wind. I had NO coverage in my house at all (well, just enough to keep it switching into and out of roaming, dropping all calls, and sucking the battery dry). So, since we don't have a land line, Sprint wouldn't buck up and offer me free Airave service (I refuse to reward them for crappy coverage by paying $100 + $5/mo for them to use MY electricity and broadband), and I don't care for any of the current choices at Verizon, well, here I am.
So back on topic, I ordered a black 32 GB 3GS on Sunday from my local AT&T store. They quoted 7 to 14 days. No email's to the contrary. Sounds like I made a mistake...
Does Apple actually ship them directly to your home or do you have to go to a store location to pick them up?
I ordered from Apple, and my order status on the store says "Prepared for Shipment", so I expect it to be shipped tomorrow or thereabouts to make it here on Friday.
ptyork: Apple offers both options. Also, I would be very surprised if they run out of stock of the 3GS, so you can probably go to the store without preordering, if you want. That said, I had my fill of lines last year, so I just opted for shipment. :-) And, yes, Apple is much better at fulfilling demand than AT&T. Go to http://buyiphone.apple.com if you want to see the details.
I ordered mine Monday from the Apple site. It still says "Prepared For Shipment" but I expect it will make it to me on Friday. I can't wait for a faster processor, more memory, and 32 GB of space!
Also looking forward to UltraSn0w to unlock my "old" iPhone 3G.
Updated: Thursday morning I got my shipment notification- FedEx. FedEx says it will deliver by 3pm tomorrow. W00t!
