Default OSX 10.5.6 Now Available

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3194

"The Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update is recommended for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard versions 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.2, 10.5.3, 10.5.4, and 10.5.5. It includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac."

So...  Yeah...  Those rumors that this update would have a lot of bug fixes?  All true.  This 668 megabyte (that's the Combo Updater of course!) update is packed with all kinds of updating goodness.

There are a lot of good fixes in here, most notably a few AirPort fixes that might save a few of you from pulling out your hair, and even a few updates for Address Book and iCal that make it push and pull data from MobileMe more quickly.

Me?  I'm most excited about this nugget:

"Improves the performance and reliability of Chess."

Thank GOD they fixed that, huh?

I've installed it on two of three Macs - no issues at all with either of them.

I've been running it since it became available on my MBP and so far, so good. I'm gonna try the wife's BlackBook over the weekend. I've noticed that the first gen MB seems to be prone to issues. I'll chalk my trouble-free install up to having a brand new machine for now, although the owner of my old first-gen BlackBook isn't having any problems and he did the update also...

I actually started having a very minor issue with Safari (it wasn't opening a few pages that it should have been able to - it was able to on other Macs in the house), so I ended up installing the combo update instead.

From now on, that's the way I'm doing these updates. Software update is just too screwy sometimes.

I'm not sure if it started with 10.5.6 or I missed it earlier, but suddenly my System Preferences has a separate preference for Trackpad, rather than having that all in the Keyboard & Mouse preference as a separate page.

That's definitely new.

Apple also removed the battery optimization setting that was in the drop-down menu of the battery/AC icon. You now have to open the Energy Saver preferences to customize it.
