Default Win Up To $1,000 Writing Applet for HanDBase 3.0

http://www.ddhsoftware.com/gallery.html

I don't see any links for this yet, but there is a huge image at DDH Software's Gallery page and I just got an email from DDH Software on it, so the contest is in full swing. If you don't have HanDBase 3.0, you can download a 30 day trial version. You should grab "HanDBase For Pocket PC Professional" to get the forms designer.

"We are looking for creative, useful applets that marquis HanDBase's flexibility. Applets will be evaluated with the Forms User Interface being worth 50% of the total score and originality, functionality and overall use of field types rounding out the other 50%. HanDBase has some fantastic features such as the Forms Designer, both PocketPC and Palm support, Multi-user sync, complex calculations, conditional statements, infrared, Bluetooth, ODBC synchronization and full Microsoft Access synchronization."

Trust me, as a faithful and long time HanDBase user, you do not have to be a developer to enter this contest. Just a bit of knowledge about how databases work and lots of creativity. :way to go: The contest ends May 15, 2003.

Too bad handBase 3.0 is bloatware. A handBase 2.77 database that was, say, 1 kb in size, once converted to v. 3.0, suddenly became 41 kb in size. If you had 10 small databases on your PDA before, you would have had maybe 10-20 kb of RAM taken up. After v.3.0 of handBase was released, those same 10 databases would now take up 400-500 kb of RAM! A 4000% increase in memory requirements!

DDH seem to have aspirations of becoming an enterprise database provider, and have forgotten the realities of memory limitations on the PDA platform.

Strange. None of my databases grew like this when converted.

SAM,

Actually DDH understands the need to streamline the new database format and is currently working on that.

Many, many new features were added to version 3 and the inevitable result is going to be an increase in memory footprint. The decision always needs to address whether to move forward and add capabilities or settle for status quo.
