Default Win A Free Copy Of Ultimate Theft Alert v3

If you've got a Pocket PC Phone Edition and are concerned about the security consequencese of losing your device (and you should be), then you might want to consider beefing up your Phone Edition with some kind of theft alerting software.

The developers at Carty Studios have such a solution, Ultimate Theft Alert v3. Basically, the software keeps track of your SIM identification and automatically sends an SMS to your pre-defined destination if/when somebody inserts a new SIM card into the phone. Kinda nifty. You can grab a free trial or full version for $14.99 here (affiliate).

BONUS: Carty Studios wants to help you readers out with your security needs by offering a free license to five of you lucky folks! Here are the rules for entering this giveaway:

• Submit a post to this thread and mention at least ONE current feature you like about Ultimate Theft Alert, ONE enhancement you'd like to see or ONE short description of your greatest Pocket PC security tragedy.
• All entry posts must be made before 12:01AM EST on Monday, December 4, 2006.
• You may enter only ONCE (i.e., one post); multiple posts will be deleted and sent to the Seventh Dungeon of the Evil Goobleslug Emperor.
• The decisions of the judge(s) are final, especially those concerning his personal attire for the day.
• As always (say it with me): No Whining!

Good luck to all, and HAVE FUN!

UPDATE: Congratulations to futaris, trucmuche, randius, jlg123456 and mmidgley! You're the winners of a free copy of Ultimate Theft Alert! Be sure to check your inbox for instructions on how to claim your prize.

If you aren't one of these lucky winners, you can still check out Ultimate Theft Alert using the links above. And pay attention, because we've got TONS of more giveaways coming!

Thanks to everyone who participated, and especially to Carty Studios for sponsoring this giveaway.

Did anyone read this announcement from the makers of this software?

===
From: Pocket PC Live! [owner@pocketpc-live.com]
ATTN: Piracy users
It has come to our attention that our software has been cracked just like every other software. We take this issues very seriously.

If you are NOT using the pirated version, you can skip this mail to save your time. or if you want to know more about our brains, keep reading..

We are teaming up with many developers to implement a module in our softwares that will cross check our applications for pirated versions in your device. For example: Software1 checks for Software2' pirated version and for exchange software2 checks for software1. If a pirated version has been detected, the module will force the device to Bootloader mode and makes it not to return for ever! We have made it in a way that the module functions in a separate thread and so there will be no slow-ing of device during the check process and the complete check process takes just less than 2 secs benchmarked on a standard 416Mhz Intel Xscale processor. This check might also be skipped as well by the crackers, but they first need to know which application checks for which and unfortunately those details will definitely be kept confidential by us(developers).

SO if you are using pirated versions, delete them before you loose your $400 device on spaing a few 10$. we will not be responsible if the device gets forced to Bootloader and turned to a heavy brick! You cannot even re-flash the device We have taken every step in the module to not disturb the safe versions and detect the pirated versions alone perfectly! Its rather a simple and easy process though.

This technology has been developed by CartyStudios, Inc. and is getting good view and publicity for us among the developer's world. Very soon every software going to implement this modules of exchange check technology. Pirated users, face the end very soon!

I love the fact that it will send an SMS when someone places a different SIM into my device. I could hand that info over to the police to help them catch the person that stole my PPC.

I love how it sends the GSM phone number. However it'd be better if it could send Cell Information and/or GPS information, depending on what was last available...

I like the fact that it's a simpler process than IIWPO to impliment. I've had IIWPO and documentation stored on my HD for a while waiting for an opportunity to install it.... but this is easier by the looks of it! Sweeet!

I like the fact that the application resists a HARD reset.

Many possible enhancements but if I say everything which can come to my mind it will look like one of these unbelievable / unconceivable "Mission Impossible" spy movies for a SW which costs only $15

This is a very innovative solution to the problem of potential theft. SMS reporting of the user's SIM info is a great feature.
One possible refinement could be the reporting of coordinates in a GPS enabled phone.

It is awesome that the software survives a Hard Reset. As for my greatest Pocket PC security tragedy ... Well, it's not really MY greatest Pocket PC security tragedy; and this software would not have helped. A friend left his Pocket PC Phone on the table of a local restaurant. Someone got it and made over $100 in phone calls/internet use before he contacted the carrier to tell them it had been stolen.

I don't. What to do if this software (or even some other unrelated software) goes awry, and a hard reset is needed. Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.
