Default Webcast: Working With Exchange Server 2003 And Mobile Devices

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;819270

If you are planning an Exchange 2003 rollout or are still wondering if it is worth upgrading to, you might check out this Web cast and learn about the benefits that Exchange 2003 can bring to your mobile users. Remember that Exchange 2003 has Mobile Information Server integrated and MIS as a separate product goes away.

"Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 includes support for both real-time and offline access to mailbox data from a variety of device platforms. From the richness of Outlook 2003, through the powerful new features in Outlook Web Access 2003 (the robust and portable Pocket PCs, Pocket PC Phone Edition, and Smartphone) to the lightweight XHTML browsers on many mobile phones, Exchange 2003 has a mobile data path for all these. This Support WebCast also discusses the detailed control of this access for administrators, and how to create a more secure model for mobile access to Exchange 2003."

It is May 27, 2003 at 1:00pm Eastern Time and is scheduled for two hours. Click here to add this event to Outlook or other .VCS enabled PIM.

This isn't about MIS 2002. MIS as a standalone product is gone. It has been incorporated into Exchange 2003, eliminating the need for a separate box many of the configuration issues. It is also more efficient over the air than MIS 2002 was.

Well that just made me want PPCPE 2003 all the sooner!

It sounds as if PPC PE 2003 will be available from Microsoft in 2003 but they said that it's entirely up to device manufacturers whether upgrades to / new devices with PPCPE 2003 will be available.

It was interesting to learn that the webcast presenter wasn't aware of any mobile phone that could forward received SMS messages over bluetooth to a PPC, which means that you'd really need a smartphone or PPCPE device to get the benefit of Exchange 2003's instant email which uses SMS to trigger the device to sync (Although they did say that it wasn't technically impossible to produce a mobile phone to do that).

I know it's not the MIS 2002. It's also not a complete different product either compared to the MIS 2002. Add some new features and updates...

He didn't say that bluetooth couldn't do that, he said that he wasn't aware of any mobile phone devices that had been manufactured that supported it.

I don't think anyone expected the presenter to be an expert on the features of every bluetooth mobile phone and he did qualify it with saying that he wasn't 'aware' of any such device rather than saying there wasn't.

I'm not convinced such a setup would be that good in any case.

The ideal solution for me would be a pocket pc phone edition along with a bluetooth headset with voice recognition, with either a wired or wirless remote control unit for the PPCPE which allowed changing volume, media tracks (both good for mp3 playback), selecting/typing phone numbers (for interacting with the phone).

We can but dream

I know. My second sentence wasn't very well taken. I should have said that it's ashame that he and others aren't "....aware of any mobile phone devices that had been manufactured that supported it." Or was he refering to MS Smartphone or PPC Edition Platform Phones? I hope so.....otherwise he has a very selective view and doesn't check/read the internet or pc magazines

A question came in asking if it was possible for a SMS message to be handled by the Pocket PC in a 2 device setup via bluetooth as the person asking the question wasn't sure if this feature (2003's improved SMS abilities) was limited to Pocket PC Phone Edition / Smartphone.

The answer was that he wasn't 'aware' of any mobile phone at present that would forward the incoming SMS message directly to the device (so that the PPC would receive it as an SMS) although there shouldn't be anything technically to stop such a feature being incorporated into mobile phones - he wasn't saying that he didn't think any mobile phone phones had bluetooth.
