Default Random Saturday Giveaway: Win a Copy of Lego Star Wars II

Coming home from CES, I happened to return with a few things that I think others would enjoy more than myself, so it's time for another giveaway! One of these things is the game Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (courtesy of Microsoft). This game has some very impressive Lego graphics, and is very fun to play. I still haven't played Neverwinter Nights 2 more than three times yet since I got it at Christmas, so I just know I'm not going to get to this game. Want to win it? Post a message in this thread telling me your earliest Star Wars memory. Did you see any of the original movies as a kid? Or were you a "late bloomer" and saw the movies later in life? One post per person, and I'm going to shut down down the contest randomly at some point today. Or maybe tomorrow. We'll see. ;-) [and in case anyone is curious, I have two copies of the game so there's a contest over at Digital Media Thoughts as well - please only enter one or the other]

UPDATE: I did the random drawing, and the winner was richardsp. Congratulations! I was personally quite touched by code-frog's story, so I'll be securing him a copy of this game as well. Thanks for participating everyone!

Default Elementary school

I remember seeing Star Wars with some friends in elementary school…northwest Indiana (Merrillville).

Ahh, memories... I was 17 when the original movie came out. As a newly-minted driver, it was a treat to be allowed to borrow my mom's Honda Civic and drive over to the Orange Cinema to watch it (for the second time) at a Sunday matinee. On the way home, on I-95, that Civic became a TIE fighter... and I was zapping all the other drivers with glee. ops:

My 17yo son is now a Star Wars fan AND a Lego fan and if I got this game I would give it to him.

I remember my mom coming to school early (ROTJ came out when I was 7). She worked, so it was an unusual treat to have her pick me up early. Then she told me that she was going to take me to see a movie, and it turned out to be Return of the Jedi.

That was the first Star Wars movie that I had seen in a theater, and I loved it!

I have instilled my love for Star Wars in all 3 of my kids now--my oldest son especially. He has practically worn grooves in my Star Wars DVDs, and he has logged hours and hours playing the original Lego Star Wars (ironically, the original Lego Star Wars did not cover the original trilogy :-D).

Star Wars came out when I was five. My earliest memory of it was my mom and i waiting in line at the theater to get in. The line wrapped around the building (which was white in my hazy memory.)

My six year old now loves Star Wars. He has the first Star Wars Lego game for our X-Box, and loves it. These are perfect games for kids. If I were to get this, I'd stick it on his PC (yes, my six year old has his own PC, doesn't yours?)

Well here's the deal. I super want to win this. Why? OMG, take a seat fellas.

My earliest memory goes back to the year that Star Wars was released. This is one my favorite memories and I doubt a year goes by where I'm not reminded of it in some way.

I don't recall the month specifically but I do recall it was hot. My dad, brother, sister, mom and I packed into our car with NO A/C and we headed out. Now at the time we lived in the sticks man. It was a long hot drive that passed like a million years. By the time we got there I felt like we had driven in from "a long time ago in a galaxy far away".

My parents didn't have a ton of money but at this time they spared no expense. Popcorn, drinks, candy man we were in movie heaven. For me the movie Star Wars was on the screen for all of 2 minutes. That movie went so fast I was amazed it was over. I was glued to my seat the entire time. Totally loved it.

This movie started a family passion where with each release we made the same journey in to town riding in the same car and coming from "a long time ago in a galaxy far away". But we never saw each movie once I think we saw each of them at least twice and when my brother could drive he, my sister and I piled up the viewings.

Why does this mean so much to me? Well a few reasons. I kind of feel like the place I grew up was the place Luke grew up. The middle of nowhere with nothing to do but check the sprinklers so the lawn didn't die.

Then! Then! My daughter was born. 8O Which took my life and pretty much ripped it apart. For the next 3 years it was a constant battle to keep her alive. We had EMT's at our house more often than we had friends or family and we couldn't have friends or family over because my daughter had no immune system.

Her older brother Grant paid the price for her illness in spades. He had cabin fever for about 2.5 years. During this time I picked up a copy of the lego star wars video game that was just a sample/demo. He loved to watch me play that game. It was definitely a special memory even though it was a demo. At the time we hardly had money to eat, in fact we skipped a few meals and a few house payments because feeding my daughter was a cool $3,000 a month. So Grant didn't get to do a whole lot of things.

Recently he has started asking me if we could play this game together again. I won't bother describing the things that happened between when last played that game and now. I'm trying to forget most of it. So it would be very, very cool to win this game and surprise him with it. He's got Star Wars posters in his room right now (some guys I know around the world from the internet all chipped in and sent us a bunch of lego's and Grant's request was Star Wars sets) that are set up like a prayer altar to the Lego Star Wars Gods. So it's a big deal for him. He likes me to draw some of the Star Wars characters like Fet, Vader, Baka (these are kid short names) and the like.

Anyway, that's me spilling my guts with to many memories some good and some bad. May the Schwarz be with all of you even if your Schwarz is bigger than mine. Watch out though, I'll "Jam your radar."

<---------------------------------------------------------------------------------->

DISCLAIMER: I talk about some personal and hard times in this post. Please don't use those as a means of saying "He deserves this or that." I don't. Judge it like the other posts and pick the best winner. For me my memories include some bumps and I can't help that but don't give me an unfair bias over others because of it.

I remember seeing the first Star Wars in elementary school and playing with my friends for weeks after always trying to make ourselves into R2D2 or C3PO.

Default Ah, the memories.

It was 1977 and I was 9. Opening night for Star Wars. My Grandfather took myself and my two brothers to the cinema in downtown Harrison, Ohio. That theater was equipped with the not so latest in technology. It was a signle theater cinema... like all the old ones. (My sisters went with my Grandma to pick strawberries... I'm sure we got the best end of that deal.)

Anyway, I also have to admit, it was one of the defining moments in my life. It was right about the time I started learning about programming. That Christmas, my Dad and I built a computer and I was amazed when he wrote a program that, get this, drew a circle on the screen. I was amazed that you could do that. First off, I was impressed with Dad.. becuase I didn't know he could so such cool things. Then we saw Star Wars... R2D2... OH MY! I was hooked, and I've been hooked ever since.

I first saw all the movies when I was 12 I think. I don't remember which one first, but they might be looked at in the right order.
Very much more importantly and imprinting for me (and that's kinda connection to this game above) was my first computing and PC games experience, which was with this first colored Star Wars Game, where you had to yet through the canyons and the death star with your X-wing! 8)
That was sooo cool, I really loved it!! I were really addicted to it! ^^
Afterwards, I was so fascinated from the StarWars games from Lucas Arts, that I bought myself the whole JediKnight series and played them all through.
