Default Pocket PC Thoughts Birthday Giveaway: HTC Touch Cruise

All right, let's kick off our 8th Anniversary celebration right - with some nice hardware! This is a near-new HTC Touch Cruise that I haven't done much more than toy around with during an unboxing video. This Windows Mobile 6 Professional smartphone features a Qualcomm MSM7200 400MHz CPU, 256 MB of ROM, 128 MB of RAM, a 2.8 inch QVGA screen, HSDPA/UMTS 2100 MHz (Europe) 850/1900 MHz (USA), quad-band GSM, Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g WiFi, both a front-facing and outward facing camera, and a 1350 mAh battery. It's unlocked and sells for around $500 USD.

Want to win it? Here's how: post a message to this discussion thread telling me what sort of device(s) you were using for organization and communication back in October 2000 when this site was launched. Were you still rocking the paper daytimer and a mobile phone? A Windows CE-based HPC? A Palm PC? Any answer is fine. One message per person, and I'll randomly select one post at 3 PM mountain time on Thursday the 23rd.

UPDATE: A reminder that if you don't see your post right away, please wait 24 hours before re-posting. Odds are that it's your first post since we moved to vBulletin and it's simply held in moderation.

It was still all about the Newton 2100. That sucker was waaay ahead of it's time as far as functionality.

Default Newton

Yep, I was on a Newton as well. God, the handwriting on that thing was a pain! But you're right on about it being WAY ahead of its' time.

Back in 2000, it was just my brain. My life was simple enough that I didn't have a paper scheduler either, and I didn't have a cell phone at the time. Man, that's a while ago.

Smile T28 and REX 6000

I had an Ericsson T28 back then for voice communication. A very solid mobile phone and still the lightest phone I ever owned. So good I bought its successor the T39 during my next contract renewal.

As for PDA, I had a Xircom REX 6000. It was very small and surprisingly versatile, but the battery life was woeful. No cradles needed, just dock into my Dell Inspiron's PC card slot. I believe I traded it in for a Palm m505 the following year.

Back in 2000 I'd never even held a Pocket PC of any kind in my hands. In a creative mood, I printed my own, personalized paper agenda for the few things that were worth jotting down (read: the things I would most likely forget otherwise). For communication, I used the good old landline.

Everyone thought I was James Bond with my Palm IIIc... I was using a pager and a landline for comm traffic.

That was a long time ago. I was rockin' the 3 ring daytimer in 2000. I had a Casio Cassiopeia, but I just watched TV shows and played games on it.
