Hmm, I think I'd convinced my boss to get a Compaq 3600 series w/ expansion pack. I also remember getting a Jornada 720 (CE based device). I liked the Jornada quite a bit, but the hinges had issues and broke after quite a bit of use. The 3615 was a pretty cool device as well, but somewhat limited. I also remember all of the flamewars on the MS forums about Jason and this site. (And still remember a certain PPC developer doing his best to boost the number of apps available for PPC over the number of Palm apps, single-handedly. :P )
I remember that phone card coming out in PCMCIA format and being available to convert the iPaq to a mobile phone. Cool, but pricey. Definitely a time of growth for PPC devices. I was quite glad that they standardized on a processor, but was always lamenting the lack of built-in memory available, especially when it was shared.
Probably the only major regret with the J720 was the fact that most PPC apps just wouldn't run on it. Some developers wrote Windows CE apps that would run just about anywhere, but they were the minority. I still got some good use out of the device, but never was able to really realize its full potential.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane with this one.
Congratulations on Eight Great years. I have been using PocketPCthoughts.com as my IE home page since 2000 in order to stay up on the technology and you all do a Great job. Thanks. In Aug. 2000 I was using a Compaq Aero 2100 with WinCE 2.0, a month later I won a Compaq Aero 2150 that I later upgraded to WinCE 3.0. Within weeks I accidently dropped the 2150 off a seven floor manufacturing tower where it was then crushed by a forklift. Amazingly the upgrade chip survived, I put it in the 2100 and continued to use it until I upgraded to a Dell Axim 51v.
I think I was using my iPaq 3900 at that time. I might have been using the jornada at the time... i can't be sure. Boy, that was back in the day I was desperate to get what ya'll had so I could support ya.
I was a systems administrator for a sales branch at the company I still work for. I recall Palms were at or near their peak then. Almost everyone had one in the office.
Personally, I had an HP 320LX palmtop. 4 gray scale screen with a green backlight (Hey it had a 640x240 though!), 4MB of Ram, and a 44Mhz processor running WinCE 1.0. I never did buy the 2.0 ROM for it. Not too long after that, the iPaq came out. And its been handhelds ever since.
I'm embarassed to say that back in 2000, I was still using a paper organizer, a Daytimer. I went through the wire bound ones first for a few years and then went the hole punch ones before finally discovering the benefits of an electronic organizer. I had tons of those crappy and cheap ones that stored phone numbers but they weren't really going to organize anything.
I didn't start using a true electronic organizer until October 2005 when i got a Palm Zire 71, which, back then, was a multimedia PDA device (for a Palm anyway) with video, music playback, built-in camera and even Wi-fi support via the Sandisk Wi-Fi card.
I've since gotten a Treo 650 and a Treo 750 and looking forward to getting other smartphones on other platforms like a Blackberry, Nokia or others.
Back in late 2000 I was either using the Casio E100 or the EM500. The E100 was reliable but was a pretty big brick. The EM500 was a great device, but it just didn't have enough program memory.
Nextel i1000 cell phone with a Palm V. There was an early cellular modem for it (can't remember who the service was from) that worked intermittently for WAP.
