I myself don't get lost very much. However, my wife is a different story. A few years ago we lived in Orlando Florida. Several times I got a call from my wife wondering if she missed a turn because "I see water". Yup. She kept driving until she got to an ocean. She really needs some help.
GPS software would have definitely helped just last year when I was on an evening outreach trip with a co-worker in an unfamiliar and totally rural area. We screwed up big time by not noticing the gas gauge before leaving our comfort zone, and spent many frantic minutes trying to get our bearings in the middle of nowhere before it was too late. The funniest part (later) was that just as we were most desparate, we tried to stop the only car we had seen for miles to ask for directions, and even though we were two women, the very elderly couple inside were terrified of us and didn't want to roll down their window or speak to us!
I like to use my GPS via bluetooth with GPS Tuner over the Atlantic Ocean on an airplane. I tape the GPS to the window inconspiciusly and then use my Axim X51V to watch the progress of the trip. I would love to have the Copilot Live 7 to use on the road.
my phone best saved me one day coming home from work. i got stuck in traffic (the highway actually was closed) and got off at an unfamiliar exit. remembering i had my holux m1000 gps in my bag, i was able to use live search to figure how to get myself home. not too exciting, but saved me nonetheless.
As my wife would tell you, she is my GPS. Having been a girl scout, she's never been lost. So now that we're expecting, I think it's good time that I actually get a GPS so she can take a break and look after the baby.
Me and some buddies went to visit a friend at school in Vermont. We weren't familiar with the area and gps wasn't an option back then. Even though we had a map, we managed to almost make it to the border b4 finding out we missed an exit. Hope that's the last wrong turn I take.
I play in an indoor tennis league, and some of the clubs are in locations that are difficult to find. I usually don't have too much problem going there, because I print out Google maps and carry them along (although shuffling the papers when driving in bumper-to-bumper traffic at 50 mph is sometimes a bit tricky :-). However, I generally figure that I'll remember my way back, not counting on the fact that it's usually dark by the time I'm finished playing, and things look different anyway going in the opposite direction. I've wasted an hour or more on a couple of occasions assuming that I would eventually find something that looked familiar... I'm just about to upgrade to a phone that has GPS, so that would definitely help!
I accidently left the GPS at home as the kids and I went on a geocaching trip. I had my PocketPC with the Pocket queries (geocaching info specifically for PocketPC & Palm devices) but no GPS. Arrgh!! A GPS integrated with the PocketPC would have been wonderful.
