Never been lost on the road - but was once lost in a forest... GPS software would have pointed me to the nearest road!

What would be nice is if all GPS nav software had the ability to "go compass", like some marine nich products.

Default Can't imagine life without GPS

I travel often around the US and rely heavily on my iPAQ and Odyssey mobile, paired with a i.Trek M5+ to get me where I'm going. It beats the heck out of Hertz' antiquated NeverLost system!

Unhappy In 2001, in Oakland, CA

In 2001, I went to the Visual Studio Live conference, in San Francisco. I went exploring near Berkeley College, and got seriously lost in Oakland, California's bad part of town. I couldn't find my way out, and I was running out of gas, in my brand new shiny rental car, and all the buildings had bars over them. Luckily, I finally found a gas station, and got gas, but the other customers knew I was not from the 'hood, and they just stared at me.

Default lost in Princeton

I got totally lost last year as soon as I left the New Jersey airport and had a terrible time getting to Princeton. Traffic was awful, so every mistake I made cost me dearly.

Default Alternate routes

One always needs a way to find alternate routes around traffic build up in New York City. The GPS has been a godsend.

With no GPS, I printed off Google Maps instructions to a hotel I had never been to before. It was evening, and the directions took me to the end of a dead end road (going from pavement to gravel to a chain link fence with no trespassing signs). Turns out, somewhere along the lines, the address was replaced with just the zip code and I was now at the center point of the zip code. I had to drive until I came to a 7-11 and could buy a map to figure out where the heck I was. A GPS would have prevented all of that.

We once got lost driving to a friend's holiday home (she was in another car), and I thought I'd save the day by pulling out my trusty old PPC + bluetooth GPS. Unfortunately, we were in a foresty area with lots of obscuring trees and I couldn't get a decent signal; needless to say my friends were less than impressed... "What's the point of having GPS if you can't use it when you need it?"

I'm in the UK and once managed to get very lost and drove south when I meant to go north... for quite a long time. I almost ended up driving off a cliff into the sea when I got to Dover! You would have thought I would have realised something was wrong when I saw the seagulls circling...
