Default Mobius 2007 Amsterdam: What's Coming Next for Windows Mobile

Mobius day one is still underway, but I wanted to share this with everyone right away: we saw the next version of Windows Mobile earlier today, and here's what I can tell you about it: it's an update and not an upgrade (it's not Windows Mobile 7). The update will be provided to device manufacturers in Q1 2008. I saw it running on current hardware (something released within the past 18 months), and it was snappy. As part of the "handshake NDA" at Mobius, none of us are permitted to write about the details of what we were shown, only our impressions of what we saw. My impression was extremely positive – not jaw-dropping, "How did they do that?" positive, but a lot of head-nodding and "Finally!" positive. I definitely wanted to have the update on my phone, that's for sure – I saw a great increase in functionality that will make any Windows Mobile user happy.

Would you say the changes are deeper/greater than WM5 -> WM6?

My impression is that the changes are more...obvious. Windows Mobile 5 to Windows Mobile 6 involved many more "under the hood" changes, which are important but not as obvious. But keep in mind this is being called an "update" and not an "upgrade" - and that should say something about the number of changes. I can't go into specifics, but the stuff and used I saw looked very cool and I don't look at my current device (an AT&T Tilt) in the same way now.

I stated it before and I keep repeating it:
HTC and other similar companies make hardware, Microsoft makes software; you cannot expect hardware companies to be pushing software that could extend the life spam of the hardware, probably they would and should do the opposite.
MS seems to think that the worldwide the cellular phone market is exactly as the US one where Carriers dictate to users what they can do.
Well they are wrong, the US is way behind the rest of the world and, in fact, overseas MS struggle.
You have an update for the OS? Excellent, sell it to the customers!
This is what as a MS shareholder I demand to the company.

Default My prediction

My prediction is that they built in a subset of WPF into the OS.

Default Unless these devices have longer battery lives, this 'update' is dead in the water

If it runs on a smaller footprint and extends battery life, I'm all ears.

Otherwise...changes under the hood/over the hood make no difference.

What about Developers? When will they release the SDK or will it not require and changes? I would guess that it would require the new .NET 3.5 that comes with VS2008. Since Microsoft is releasing VS2008 this month to the public and already has for MSDN Subscribers. Did you talk much with them about the future of application development? With processing power and memory increasing I expect a crazy new set of possibilities for developers and geeks alike.
