Default Macromedia Announces the Pocket PC Flash Content Contest Winners

http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/de...pc_winners.html

"On March 29 Macromedia opened the Pocket PC Flash Contest to developers who wanted to flex their Flash prowess to win one of eight Apple iPods or the grand prize — a 42-inch plasma TV! The contest was meant to challenge developers to see how fast and easy mobile development is with Macromedia Flash and to showcase the next generation of mobile applications."

A few months ago, I posted on Macromedia's Pocket PC Flash Content Contest, where developers across the world were encouraged to submit their mobile Flash applications in the following categories: most innovative use of Flash, best animation, best business application, best educational content, best game, best interactive content, best productivity application, and best overall use of Flash. The winners have just been announced and they are:

Grand Prize Winner: Temples of Taipei, by Charlie Tai
Most Innovative Use of Flash: Unplugged TV: The Chelsea Project, by Olga Sa (Unplugged TV)
Best Animation: Ng Met Lee, by John Chan (Postgal Workshop)
Best Business Application: FlashAirlines, by Massimo Falvo (01design)
Best Educational Content: History of Achaemenids, by Pooya Partovi Azar (Negin Co. Ltd.)
Best Game: Der Vampier, by Normal Stams (Chromotronic)
Best Interactive Content: Temples of Taipei, by Charlie Tai
Best Productivity Application: The Negotiator, by Cody Tolmasoff
Best Overall Use of Flash: ExlibPDA, by Ivan Moen

These Flash applications are a blast to play with, and because they can be downloaded at the Macromedia Pocket PC Exchange (an account is needed), I recommend you check them out.

Awareness of one's customers; that's key to success in any business, right? If so, why is it that Macromedia's " Pocket PC Exchange" link gets me this crap in Pocket IE?

Yeah, you need to download the files first (preferably from a PC) and then copy them over to the Pocket PC. It sort of defeats the purpose of helping push the market towards mobility, but then again, what's new? Mobile applications have always depended on a host computer being nearby.

Macromedia are pushing hard the idea of using Flash for rich media content on mobile devices, so you would expect their site to be mobile friendly. The truth is that most of it is, at least you can actually view the content at least :-)

But the download page for these files is actually aimed at developers, not consumers. The Exchange site is where developers can share and/or sell code to other developers, and it is able to link (sort of) directly into development tools like Dreamweaver, Director and Flash.

In other words, you are not really expected to arrive on that page with a PocketPC as you cannot use any of the Macromedia tools on one. Sure it would have been nice if they had made these files available on a PPC0friendly site, but since they are targetting developers not consumers they are justified in their decision.

For the record, only two of the apps come with installers

- ExLib has a full installer, and I recommend you install it to a memory card because it is a 16 Mb installation. You can also download an updated version from http://www.exlib.no/

- Flash Airlines has a cab file that you need to copy to your PDA

Both of these want you to have internet access too, but you can use the applications without.

Unfortunately I am without PC-based internet access for a while. Not that I ever used a PC all that much... mostly my nasty old notebook is a media processor and CAB file unpacker for my PPCs. I've just no interest in PC use. So if mobile device tools/content aren't available through a PPC, they're useless to me. My PC's PC slots died a couple of months ago. The thing is 5 years old this month - I purchased it a month after getting my first PPC when it became clear that not a lot of installers would work on the PPC.

Targeting developers while alienating consumers. Justifiable? Maybe, but not smart.
