This is a very cool program. I would use this for two things. I would use it for performance art, for one. The thought of being able to create and output all the music and sound effects that I would need to bring my readings to life, all in the size of a pocket pc, is fantastic. This would lighten my load and catch peoples attention so much more than reading alone. Combine this software and an ipaq with some really great speakers, and Id be set.

The second thing I would use it for, is an indie film project my friend and I are working on. We`ve been working on a story board for a short while. But I told her that I want to conduct the sound effects, and at least half of the score on a pocket pc. I want to be the first, or at least the first of a few to do this! Ive already envisioned in my mind, much of what I would do. This would trip out most people to know that much or most of the sound was initially created on a device small enough to fit in a hand.

My goal is to find new ways to push the envelope with this software and pocket pc. Now if this software could just allow for realtime analog audio input from live instruments and voice, and MIDI, it would really, REALLY blow my socks off. But hey, one sock is off already, and I cant wait to use it. When I first heard what it could do, I went on and on about it to my friend. Really great program.

I'd use it to entertain myself, and to feel like I've been productive on those long business trips and such, or sitting at home when I don't feel like turning on the PC.

I'd use it for my music GCSE. I've downloaded the demo but my Pocket PC is being repaired at the moment, so I'll try it when it comes back.

Griff would be cool for many reasons:

1. I am a guitarist/computer geek who loves to blend all my passions. I record on my computer using Cakewalk Guitar Studio Pro, and own a MIDI based guitar system (Roland GR-30). Here are some links to some sample songs I have recorded:

http://www.tomato.com/~caggiani/music/backcountry.mp3
http://www.tomato.com/~caggiani/music/sea_of_minors.mp3

So to be able to do some of this writing/recording in the palm of my hand would be a dream!

2. The pure coolness factor of it all! A portable writing tool for musicians on the go!

3. Justification for spending so much money on PDA's and music gear!

heres one for you,
I used to be a street busker in san francisco, CA. I played live electronic music on the street. basically a laptop, a couple of synths, and a midi sax. well, last september I felt as if my career was going nowhere, so I decided that, not only was I going to make a go of it in europe, but that my music was going to be my sole source of income. well...the only way to do this was to only bring the most essential and smallest equipment i had and make due. why? because, from what other artist friends of mine have told me, it is notoriously difficult to go to certain countries with loads of gear as it sends up a flurry of red flags with customs, etc...So My whole setup has been condensed into a medium sized carry on bag. it consists of a mackie mixer, sony laptop, yamaha synth module, digital compressor and my midi sax, plus cables and US power converter. this solution doesn't attract any unwanted attention from airports security or thieves, and, since It is carry-on size, I can take it on the plane with me and avoid getting it back non-functional or in pieces (which has happened 3 times!!)
well my vaio is wonderful but slightly underpowered in live performance using sequncing software. it would be great to be able to take some of the load off of my VAIOs 300mhz chip. I already use my ipaq in performance to either bring in tracks while I reset other equipment, or when the VAIO starts to choke on all that real time data. to be able to put it into my rig as an integral part of my show would greatly increase the quality and density of my live mixes as well as being very cool looking! I would use griff to bring in chordal synth parts, basslines, analog arpegiations; mostly anything except the beats, which my laptop excels at. I garantee that I will sqeeze every bit of available sequencing power out of Griff AND my beloved ipaq! (and report the results here!).
By the way, does griff or any other company plan to release a .wav editor for pocket pc in the style of wavelab or sound forge? it has a bigger screen and almost as much processing power as most dedicated samplers...and it is much cooler! ah, to chop up my samples whilst riding the the train...heaven.

Easy.

I lead worship at my church several different times a week. Most of the time I get to have the luxury of a full band helping out, but when I do the music for the Kids Church, it's just me and my guitar. Griff would allow me to sequence in a setlist for the kids, and give them what "the big people get" without having the musicians there that normally help and can't make it to one more thing.

I already have my PPC at church on Sundays with Laridians Bible, and FreqTune for my guitar. This is a perfect addition.

Default Perfect on the go

I mainly record dance and pop music and Griff is perfect for me. I can program rhythms and other parts on the go, be it flying or in the car. It seems like a great program to allow instant inspiration and creativity!

If I were doing a small show it would be cool to actually run some midi hardware from the unit - definitely the most portable device in the rig!

Default What would I do with it?

I am a MIDI musician through and through. I've lived for years in places where the existence of other musicians has been virtually nil, and my extensive involvement in writing or arranging scores for Community Theatre has forced me to be very well versed in live theatre and making MIDI music sound as "natural" as possible. All of this has necessitated a dependence on mobility and flexibility. The Grif masterpiece means that I can now leave my montrous desktop at home and utilize the power and mobility of my iPaq no matter where my gig takes me!

Default Griff - fantastic merging of technologies

As a long time musician, I mainly tinker and record stuff for myself. Kind of a cathartic experience. I still have my original Yamaha QX5 hardware sequencer which is great for throwing ideas down quickly. As we all moved to computer based systems, while being fantastically powerful, the interface has often let them down, requiring huge monitors where everything is tweaked with a mouse - nothing can be done without a huge computer rig, even putting down some simple riffs and tunes. I remember a cool little Yamaha device, about the size of a VHS tape, which was designed to be an on-the-go studio with many of the functions of Griff. The idea was you could sequence tunes anywhere, however, as with most hardware it was a one-function device that was quite costly, so despite wanting one I didn't end up buying it. Now I've entered the PPC world with a PPC2002 Toshiba e570, I am absolutely amazed at the innovation, and the device that will let me read emails will also allow me to view movies, play games, remotely control my servers at work and now sequence tunes on the fly! This is far and away the killer app for musicians, meaning I could tinker anywhere, lay down some tune ideas and wouldn't need my home rig to get inspirational ideas down! Bring it on!
