Default Geekzone Reviews The Bluetake BT300 Bluetooth LAN Access Point

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=1261

"After using Bluetooth technology to connect mobile phones to terminal devices (PDA or headsets), the next most sought after feature of Bluetooth must be network connection."

Why, I have no clue, but I'll leave my fondness for BT out of the reset of this post.

"Although slower than wi-fi, the fact that a single device can be the information hub is a plus. A Bluetooth enabled laptop can host synchronisation (Pocket PC, Palm, Symbian), connect to the internet via mobile phone, have a wireless headset connected, use a printer from the other side of the room."

So, if bluetooth APs are your thing, check this review out. It shows you how the BT300 will give you a number of options in creating a bluetooth wireless network. must resist urge...

I had one of these which was great for a while, then suddenly stopped working. I had no idea what was up, but it was acting as if the Bluetooth chip had burned out.

Nice thing was, it didn't need a router and it had great range. Now I use the Belkin access point, but that needs a router to get an IP address from the cable modem, and it no longer reaches my bedroom.

I would have returned the X-bridge, but I bought it on eBay from another country. Actually, its replacement was a Tecom a/p from Singapore, but it didn't work at all, and the seller won't reply to my e-mails. I've learned my lesson about that, and am buying things from within the country now.

Just some thoughts if you're looking at using one of these.

There are lots of cool BT gadgets but they all seem to be twice as expensive as I am willing to pay for that functionality. This makes resisting the urge easier...

why a BT AP?

- doesn't drain my pda's battery like wifi
- the belkn one i use allows me to share the usb printer with all the pc computers in the house
- with the wifi ap i've had to set up wep/mac access control lists etc and that's hassle to re-config to share with 'ad-hoc' guests, anyone who has a bt device can just pair up and login and as the range is limited to cover a limited area inside the house (unlike the wifi ap) it's not subject to possible external abuse
