You have to use it to see how well it works. Until GMail, I abhored any web based email system. I pull my hair out when I have to go back to Hotmail or Yahoo to catch up on whatver came in that week that wasn't spam related.

A question for those of you that use a 3rd party to login to gmail - like those mentioned in this thread. What assurance do you have that your gmail address and passwords have not been compromised (not saying that they have and cerainly not trying to cast suspicion on anyone)?

Maybe I am a little paranoid and maybe I try to protect my email a little too much, but I have a real problem when it comes to handing a 3rd party my keys....

Just my .02 - YMMV

The way gmail light works you "keys" are encrypted though the whole process but that doesn't stop someone from making a fake gmail light and collecting user data.

So I guess the answer to your question is no, there are no assurances. However at least two of the gmail sites mentioned are hosted by prominent menbers on this site and noted pocket pc software developers. So I personally trust them. However I would not go out and use any old gmail light setup. As double insurance i setup my own gmail lite page on my server and read through all the original gmail light code, which is available at source forge and thus not spy/malware, just to reasure myself that the original code was not "evil".

I could very easily make a new account on this site and post in this thread with a link to my new gmail site that is actually a pass word collector.

So everyone should be carful. Just use common sense.

I for one trust this one: http://www.pc-counselor.com/gmail/index.php
The host is very active in these and other forums i read and i use several pieces of his software on my ppc. I trust him not to try to steal my pass word.

Or if you have access to a php web server you can very easily setup your own gmail lite page.

My thoughts exactly, I think I'll just be patient and wait for gmail to come out with their own mini version.

If you are afraid just download the sources form http://gmail.wiggster.com/ and put them on your own server!

Default Gmail Security

Good points about security. I don't use gmail for anything I necessarily need to keep secure. It's mostly extra storage space. I have other email accounts that I use for logging into and purchasing from retail sites like Amazon, eBay, et al. However, if you think about it, how do you know that using the offical GMail or Hotmail sites are secure? What's to keep a Microsoft or Google employee from reading through your email for passwords, credit card numbers, etc? The only way to be sure is to host your own mail server and secure it yourself.

To you gmail users.

Do you guys know if you can set an exclusive filter for your email account?
That's the only reason i still use Hotmail, if it's not on my list, it goes straight to the junk mail folder. :?

I don't use any web based service for secure transactions like purchases. They go to a POP server and get deleted when I download, which is usually almost instantly. I don't even want it on my ISP's email backup.

Just so you all know, you can trust me and my site. But should you? No. You know nothing about me, except that I post on here and have Strong Bad playing Duck Pond Simulator on my avatar. As was mentioned before, not just here but every time this is brough up; if you want Pocket GMail/gmail-lite, put it on your own server. It's free, and many people have it for download.

How do I know you can trust me, though? Because I have a script that zips up my Gmail directory and lets you download it, and I'd be too lazy to fake it and have two gmail directories and zip one... too much effort

But get back on topic, people! Gmail is doing an HTML version themselves!
