Ed, love the podcasts- they are getting better each time.
Re: the Tablet PC. I understand why you might not understand if a Tablet PC can provide the type of utility you need but dismal failure? I think that statement is a little strong perhaps. The only dismal failure is the lack of marketing- I believe, as a long-time handheld user like yourself, that if you used a Tablet PC for a week you would be hooked. I went through the same process myself and I know what happens when the light goes on. You can now find Tablets by OEMs like Toshiba and HP for $1500- 1600 that are nicely configured so maybe you should take another look.
Keep the podcasts coming!

I still have to see a tablet pc in a shop here in the UK. The shelves are full of laptops, but nothing else. Its quite frustrating, as I'm quite interested.
Yeah, I thought about getting a tablet PC, but lack of power detered me. I can't afford to have two PCs, so the tablet would be it. I need one with a standard P-M, 60Gb+ HDD, 512MB (pref. 1GB) RAM and a builtin keyboard. I would also like a decent (not overcharged, just decent) GPU as well.
Anything like that out there?

Maybe, maybe not. I carried a tablet PC for the last year, and just went back to a regular notebook form factor (Apple doesn't sell tablets ). In all honesty, I really don't miss the tablet PC. It's great for notetaking in classes, but apart from that I almost never used the tablet form.

Check out the Toshiba Porteges. I can't remember which GPU it is, but they pack a lot of punch. 1440x1050 12" screen, P-M, 60+GB HDD, up to 2GB of RAM. One of the very few devices out there that have such a high-res 12" screen. My officemates love the unit.

As Janak points out the Toshiba M200 is a top notch machine. The new Toshiba Tecra M4 is even more of a powerhouse with a 14.1" screen and is probably (but who knows in the end) WindowsVista ready with beefy specs in the graphics area. All convertible Tablet PCs have an attached keyboard making them full-fledged notebook computers with a screen that swivels around to the slate form. To me this provides the best of both worlds. Of course, I'm not biased or anything.

I thought I remembered a Toshiba with an nVidia GPU.

The Tecra M4 comes with an nVidia with either 64 or 128 MB.
Nice!!

The M4 in Australia is packed with a 128MB GeForce Go 6600 (PCI Express 16x), which in my opinion, packs a lot of punch. If you receive the Harris Tech monthly catalogues, you'll see it heavily advertised in the laptop section.
