Re: Samsung NEXiO Coming Soon?
This PDA will retail for approx $600 US. The screen is 800x480 and very nice. There is a glare to the screen since it's glossy (like sony big-screen tv's)...i played with one for a few days..

Shame it's on WCE300, not PPC or XP, since I'm getting the impression that it won't be able to run standard ARM PPC apps, and since its ARM it can't use normal XP apps. The screen looks really nice though, I'm hoping someone can hack around and get PocketPC app support.

The skinny on the Nexio
I got to play with one of these the other day....the 160 model
**It has 802.11
** has a browser that is pretty basic..it supports active x and java.
** has a type 2 cf slot...i put my microdrive in it.
** comes with pocket word, an excel viewer and a powerpoint viewer.
** comes with it's own media/mp3 player
** had windows media player loaded
** It will play a windows media file in the browser just like a standard pc
** There was a detachable keyboard fixed to it (long-ways) that when closed, acts as a nice screen protector. the keyboard stays closed by little magnets in the casing.
** The screen is 800x480...very clear and pretty...but since it has a glossy screen, everything reflects off it...gives you a headache after a while. The windows and text appeared very thin.
** The stylus is not one solid piece...it's actually a very tiny stylus that telescopes-out to a full stylus...its a really really bad stuls.
** The 160 has 128mb RAM (or so i was told) and 400MHz XScale Processor running Windows CE.NET as the operating system
** The OS looks and feels just like Win XP...has task bar, control panel etc...
** I cranked up the volume all the way and it was pretty low still...my ipaq blows it away.
** I didnt fiddle around with the voice recording but it's there.
**There was no standard USB port...there was some kinda port...could be it's own USB connector
** This unit is pretty large...5" screen prefect for displaying a full browser window without reformatting. I think it's too large to be my next PDA...it's like a very small laptop.
** I didnt notice this unit boasting any contacts/addresses/appointment applications...but then again, I didnt look to hard. I was concentrating on it's ability to surf the web very well...which it does!

WOW. The screen people, THE SCREEN!!
Question: Built-in CDMA2000 1X Module, does this mean cell phone? That I can talk with it? Or just for data?
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/wo...NEXIO-S160.asp
The S160 is simply AMAZING. I would REALLY consider this unit if all the pocketpc software out there would run on it, which many software won't, given its a different OS. Depends on the end on the API's the programmer uses, I think, I wonder if any developer here could give us more insight. AFAIK, learning to program for the pocketpc, many API's used by pocketpc apps are NOT available in CE. See how it mentions Outlook runs on the device? And internet explorer 5.5? This device is simply amazing... 128Mb RAM!! VGA out built in!! Wifi built in!! KB as screen cover.... CF2!! Way to go Samsung, this IS innovation!! All 05.inches thick which is NOT BAT AT ALL!!
But as I said... the lack of software for it will kill it... as far as I go, I would buy it with the money I am saving for a PPC Phone Edition if Pocket PC software would run on it (which as I said, I suspect it wont). For me, 3rd party software is one of the things I enjoy the MOST about PPC's....
Even so, so tempted!!!
Grrrr damn free market economy... makes decisions so difficult!!!

THE SCREEN IS VERY DIFFICULT TO LOOK AT FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES. ALL YOU SEE IS YOUR REFLECTION AND ALL THE WINDOWS AND TEXT ARE VERY VERY THIN. THE SCREEN IS REALLY CRISP AND SHARP...BUT STILL...TOO HARD ON THE EYES.

Yes, excel VIEWER. In the app, there is no "file, new etc.." But who knows...maybe it will be normal excel when released. This runs CE.NET..I have no idea if PPC apps would even be allowed to get installed. The feel of this new OS is like regular windows...makes PPC operating system seem very limited

The website does say:
Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF Viewers..... you'll have to make up your mind what they mean:
Word, Excel, Powerpoint and (PDF Viewers)
Word, Excel, (Powerpoint and PDF Viewers)
Word, (Excel, Powerpoint and PDF Viewers)
(Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF Viewers)
Given the s in viewers it is not only PDF viewes.. thus it seems we got a crippled OS....
And given the clues... your experience dbrahms... Samsung gave us beautiful hardware (IMHO) with crippled OS....
Heh, got my 10 minutes of geek paradise at least!! ops:

Personally, this is where I'd like to see PDAs going. The bigger, higher resolution display makes me drool . It's a shame it's so darned hard to read or look at as some say. And the fold-down cover/keyboard combo, very nice. It's probably not something I'd buy, especially at that price, but it's a good step forward I think.
