Pictures of Hitachi's New (and Huge) Pocket PC

WinCE Japan has pictures of the new Hitachi Pocket PC with VGA (partial English translation here) and a Zaurus-like slide-out thumbboard, and put simply, it's large, perhaps to the point of being non-pocketable:



Now, before we all immediately dismiss the unit, the iPAQ 4150 pictured above it is one of the smallest Pocket PCs out there, and depending on your application, the extra size may be worthwhile. I've held the sister Zaurus unit, and while it's not small, it's certainly hand-able. I'd love to see comparison pics against my e805, since that's no petite unit either (although I suspect it's shorter).

Looks like something handy to have around though if you get attacked. Im sure it will raise quite a bump on somebodies head

Man, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw the pic. With this thing, I could get rid of my wife's kubotan. Dagnabbit, that's a huge PPC.

That is pretty big, but like stated previously, depends on your use. I love my HP 4150. Best PDA investment I have ever done through out my PDA years.

You know, this could definitely give tablet pcs a run for their money. Did you see the pic of it running remote display, looks pretty good to me.

I missed that... that is pretty interesting. I don't know if it'll give tablets a run (not full-fledged Office apps on the device) but it could be a nice admin tool for other things, despite being a biggun.

One thing this pda does have going for it is a plastic screen cover. I have a 4355, and every sturdy case I own (alu-leather, metal) add to the length and nearly double the thickness of it.

I doubt I'll consider this device, though. I'm not a big fan of the slide-out keyboards, as I do pretty much all my data entry, long or short, with the keyboard. Sliding the thing out adds an extra step (and offers another reason for me to drop the thing).

I kind of thought a 4355 to this comparison would be more fair. Sticking the smallest PPC on top of it sure isn't. It doesn't look any wider than the 4155, and it doesn't look much longer in the pics than a 4155 with snap on keyboard. The pic has it open but you can get a feel for it. It does appear that a keyboard can be directly plugged in to what appears to be a standard mini-USB port..USB host? Doesn't do much for me, but a lot of folks want that.
