More on the O2 Xda Zinc

Remember the Xda Zinc? Hopefully, you do, considering the Xda Flame stole the show all week long.

Are there any new PDA phones coming out that AREN'T of this design? They change one or two specs and call it a "new" phone. Gone are the days of the innovations of the MPX and the Universal. While the specs of the MPX sucked, the design was killer. Take an MPX, jam in a 400MHZ processor, a 3G radio and 64MB of memory and you would sell a ton of them. I loved that flip/clamshell combo design of the MPX.

An MPX design would be really nice, but maybe it should be a little thinner too...

I think the (side) slide out qwerty is innovative as well. I mean it only appeared last year [I think it started with the Wizard], maybe that is why other manufacturers are 'adapting' it as well. Which begs the question why aren't we seeing more devices with the Uni or MPx form factor???

Traditional PAD form factor [HTC et al]
Slide up Numberpad [O2 Stealth et al]
Slide up Qwerty [Samsung i7xx]
Side slide Qwerty [HTC et al]
Front facing Qwerty [Treo et al]
Front facing Numberpad [ASUS P505]
Tablet Style with Qwerty [HTC et al]

but we are seeing a lot more of the sub 3 inch sceen side slide qwerty devices and of course the traditional pad form factor.

I want something in the JAQ3/UBI501 formfactor but with UMTS and a faster processor [atleast 400Mhz]. HTC are you listening?

If this is really it (I doubt it) then I just hope it will have some pretty good features/specs since the design is not really that good. And the screen shape???

It may have appeared ona Windows Mobile device last year only, but it's something which has been available in another device more than that.

I guess the problem is the complexity of the connectors and how to make them smaller. There is a copy of the Universal and it's definitely not that attractive at all.

we just received information that the O2 Xda Zinc (designed by Asus) has a "spurious private messages" firmware bug similar to the one affecting the Motorola Q:

once again it shows that MSFT does not have anything to test this issue in their platform test suite, and that major Windows Mobile device manufacturers are still un-aware of this issue.

this firmware bug may affect applications that use private messages (in the range [0x8000 to 0xBFFF]) for inter-thread communications.

other Windows Mobile devices that are known to have this firmware bug include:

- Motorola Q
- Samsung i-600
- Asus P525
- E-Ten M500
- E-Ten E700
