Treo 700 Software List

The 240X240 Dilema.

Many Pocket PC phones nowadays have 240x240 resolution because Windows Mobile 5.0
doesn't support 320x320 resolution and the next square screen resolution supported is 480x480.
However when it comes to prices of touch screens, the screens with 480x480 are too expensive,
so Pocket PC phone manufacturers, who wanted to use square resolution in order to accommodate
a QWERTY keyboard, were forced into 240x240.

Examples of devices sporting the square screens are the HP iPaq HW6515, HW6715, Palm Treo 700w,
and Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX T830 Pocket PC phones. Look for some others later in the year.

When regular Pocket PC applications and games are run, the square screens cut off the information
below the 240 pixel mark. Sometimes, they do scroll but often that's not the case which means
that about 25 percent of the display is missing.

The only real solution to this problem is to have software that is designed to accomodate the
240x240 resolution.

Developers have begun to rework existing games and applications to work on square screen devices
but a convenient list of what's currently available is a little difficult to come by. So, I
decided to start a thread here to hopefully help a few folks out that will be buying these units
this year.

How reliable is the list? ALL the programs listed by myself have been confirmed by the developers themselves so they should work fine. If, not contact the developer on their product page.

Others who add to the list may have tested them on their own devices or not. Hard to control that, so use your own judgement when trying them out.

The Treo 700w in particular promises to bring many new Pocket PC users into the fold. This list
will hopefully guide many of them to what's available.

This list is by no means comprehensive, so if you know of any programs that are confirmed to
work on 240x240 devices, feel free to include them in this thread.

Please follow the basic format that I've started but feel free to add your comments, if any, so
that people will get a good idea of what the software is about. You don't need to shorten
the URL's like I did.

We should somehow coordinate the efforts. I'd lead it, but alas I have no time...

Actually, the list on PDAPhoneHome was the inspiration for the list.

But, like you, I found that some didn't work on my own unit. So I decided to only list software that I personally tried or that at least made some reference to compatibility in the listing.

Eventually, I hope to have tried most if not all the software and maybe add a mini-review of each.

It would be nice to co-ordinate. How do you propose we do that?

Thank you very much for starting this list. I just got my 700w yesterday and had not had good luck finding a true compatibility list until I came across your listing (I came close to getting Cingular's 8125 instead, but decided to try Verizon out for a while as their coverage is supposed to be better for some of the places I travel to. But, I'm still holding onto my Cingular account for now, too.) Fortunately I already own most of the non-game software you list, so will just be a matter of deciding which I want to put on the Treo and ensuring that have the latest versions (not a problem of course).

The three items I am thinking about adding in the near team are: PI, Calligrapher, and FlexWallet, and I have a question on the first two of these: are PI and Calligrapher worth their memory cost? (That is, is the added functionality worth the memory hit?) This question especially applies to Calligrapher.

EDIT (update): I have installed PI, FlexWallet 2006, iLauncher, and SkTools. I love them all. Fantastic additions to the Treo.

BTW, SkTools now has a component called "Free RAM" that actually cleans some of the "garbage" out of RAM (left from apps leaving parts in memory after being fully closed out, and may even clean some out of gwes.exe). This is above and beyond the separate cleaning that it does for clearing out the PIE cache. It freed up almost an additional 2MB for me. I've been looking for something like this for PPCs now for a good long while, and the developers of SkTools are really to be commended. Does a super job on my x50v too (sometimes running it two or three times back to back will free up a few hundred more KB - I did, once, over use it as it appeared to free up something it should have, but it seems conservative enough with normal use).

Thank you for this stellar list. One of my decision factors in purchasing the new 700w was the availability of a today screen app that allows me to view multiple days on my Today screen. Now that I know PocketBreeze is compatible it makes the 700w much more alluring.

I've also confirmed that Pocket Fitaly 3.5 works, enabling great speed up of text entry. You have to choose the QVGA installation option (might be obvious to most, but to a long-time VGA user like myself, having QVGA again is taking a bit of getting used to, although the Treo screen is great).
