Missed Calls on Treo 700w (when password protected)

This is my first Windows Mobile device and first smartphone. I've been using a Palm OS PDA for about 7 years, I haven't transitioned completely to WM yet due to this problem...

When I password protect the device (using the Simple PIN for now), I miss about 15-20% of incoming calls. The calls go straight to voicemail and then I receive a voicemail page. Sometimes the calls don't even register as missed calls. The RF signal is strong with 3-4 bars (Los Angeles and Las Vegas) and the ring volume is not on mute. When I disable the password protection, I don't experience missed calls. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a solution for it?
