Default EVDO vs 1xRTT speed tests

I tested my 700w's speeds using 1xRTT and EVDO (turned off EVDO with #*#3836) to see the effect of EVDO on data transfers. I used www.dslreports.com/stest and their servers in SFO and LAX. PDAnet was used for connecting my laptop to the test site. I did did three tests for comparison - 1xRTT, EVDO and my home DSL. I ran each tests three times at each site to get an average speed. I also ran 1xRTTT a fourth time at SFO to see if the difference between there and LAX was repeatable. (it was - that was interesting because it only happened with 1xRTT)

The results - EVDO appears to offer very little advantage in uploads over 1xRTT but is anywhere from 2x to 3x as fast on downloads - so page loading for web browsing and getting data files will be faster but if you do a lot of uploading you'll see no gain of consequence.

The results (in KB/Sec):

Default 1xRTT and EVDO

How do you know if you are using 1xRTT or EVDO on your Treo? I always have the 1x (in a box) at the top of my Treo.

The box either says 1x or EV - you may not be in an EVDO coverage area so it reverts to 1x.

Default ok thanks

i got 13kB/sec at bandwidthplace using the 1x connection and 643 kB/sec via my cable connection. I guess the evdo service isn't available here in winston salem, nc. I also have a gprs account with cingular on my laptop and I only get 7kB/sec
