Default ASUS A730W offered with Windows Mobile 5? (maybe with a new model number)

Does anyone think this may happen. I think this is my next dream device as long as they are going to release a WM 5.0 version of it.

I wouldn't bet on it. Asus seem focused on bringing Windows Mobile 5.0 to their upcoming GPS Pocket PCs (and before you get your hopes up, it's nothing as exciting as the A730W).

Besides, I sent them an email half a year ago asking about their plans for a Windows Mobile 5.0 upgrade for the A730/A730W and I'm still waiting for a reply.

Ugh its getting dismal this next generation of PPC's will have everything I require in a PDA. HP certianly isn't fitting the bill, and all the rest of the devices I have looked at I would have to make a "sacrifice" I.E. no CF-Slot or missing some other component.

If you're looking for a powerful device, the Axim X51v should fit your needs. Granted, it doesn't have a stellar battery life, but if you can look past that, then I'd seriously consider it.

I looked at that I have some big problems with that device -

First - Its Dell and my experiences with them in the past have been to put it nicely - less than desireable.
Second - I can't stand the button layout... I like the Asus layout much more.
Third - I hear the WM 5.0 version has a few glitches going on with it (I think it may be realted to selling the same old hardware just with a new OS but thats just my opinion).

In all the Dells not on my worst list but it is on my want to avoid list.

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you've had with Dell. For what it's worth, my experiences have been stellar, and the same could be said for countless number of other people who read this site and own an Axim.

But if you want to look elsewhere for a VGA device, there's the HP iPAQ hx4700, Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX 720, and HTC Universal. I'd recommend a couple others, but they're either unsupported and/or industrial devices.

If you're willing to wait, look out for the release of the Acer n300 series. It's shaping out to be an absolutely awesome device.

So far WM5.0 is sorely lacking...
Dismal benchmark results due to a non-optimized OS, needing registry tweaks with more than one "cache" setting.....AND, if that wasn't enough, the OS has problems with older programs.... AND it implements a security feature wich need a hack prog, to disable or many new progs will need to be "signed" to and need to pay M$ for it.
Bla, it will never run as fast as 2k3, and so far TOOO MANY dumb companies are not giving this OS the RAM IT TRULY NEEDS!!!
It definitely needs more ram to run with optimal "cache" settings...

P.S.
I posted this with my 730w in WIFI mode...

Think of the new OS... as a sensitive guy who must be helped to keep slim, and in shape constantly, in order to perform well.

Think of the 2k3se OS as a "don't give a dam" kinda guy that don't need much help ... and gets the job done, faster..

So with the new OS you will be having to do more maintenance to keep it running smooth...
In other words I can predict that you will needing to be a regular Tweaks 2k2 and SKTools user...
