Default Upgrading from IPAQ questions

After comparing my IPAQ 3835 to a Axim at the Dell store went home and ordered one. A few questions:

My IPAQ came with Outlook 2002. Will I have to un install 2002 and install 2000 that comes with Axim or will it work ok with OUtlook 2002 ?

From reading messages on this board I assume I need to remove Activesync 3.6 and install 3.5 that comes with Axim, right ??

Forget to check box for screen protectors when placing order. Anyone know if they are avaliable elsewhere or where they are located on Dell site ???

Thanks

You do not need to downgrade Outlook or Activesync.

I think that is half right. You certainly do not need to downgrade Outlook. Outlook XP (2002) works great.

For ActiveSync though, the 3.6 download does not include Axim drivers. (Heck it doesn't even include Jornada drivers  ). I don't think I have heard of anyone having any luck getting the drivers off the Dell CD onto the PC for AS 3.6 to use them. Nor does just tryng to load the AS version on the Dell CD over 3.6. It seems the successful have uninstalled AS 3.6 and installed the AS off the Dell CD, to get the device recognized properly. Once done you can upgrade back to 3.6, but I'm not sure it is neccessary, since the AXIM ships with 3.5. It 'should' work fine and if you have issues, tech support would likely expect the included version to be the one you are running.

Well, now you have. I'm using 3.6 and it works just fine.

Agreed 3.6 works fine just install the Dell drivers from the install disk, skip the ActiveSync installation.

As far as screen protectors go most PPC screen protectors will work on the Axim, as most have 3.5" screens, the exceptions are the iPaq 3.78" and the Genio e550 4". I personally like the ones from Dell they are a "hard" design that slips under the upper and lower edges of the screen.

Cheers!

As a fellow iPaq 3835 owner, I'm curious as to what were the main reasons you chose to upgrade in comparing the two devices. It's obvious to me that the Dell is a better unit from the specs I've seen, but I'm curious as to your reaction when seeing the Axim up-close.

Number 1 reason: Much brighter screen and better color

Number 2 reason; Much smaller compared to my IPAQ with sleeve

Anyway I'll get the Dell in about two weeks, I'll certainly keep my IPAQ until then so as to compare the two.

My 2 cents worth. I went from 3850 to 400MHz X5. I did not change anything on the PC to run the X5 except drivers for the new device found crap the XP spits out. AS 3.6 works fine as does Outlook XP.

What I found is that I miss the screen cover of the iPAQ, I also miss its loud and crips sound, X5 is crackly and low on the volume. I missed the pop up stylus and the fact that iPAQ has a larger screen. Having said that I like the X5's amazing screen, I like th rubber feet on the back and the grips on the side. I like dual slots and I dig the scroll dial. Over all I am happy with the X5 but I wish I bought the O2 PPC, if anyone is willing to trade\sell theirs let me know. :P

I've had no trouble with the speaker, but for anything more than the usual clicks beeps and alarms I use headphones anyhow. As far as the stylus goes, I've seen too many of the Ipaq's springs non-working. I'll take the friction fit any day.

Perhaps it is just my speaker and I should have them look at it. I find it half as lound as the iPAQ if that. Even when I have the headphones on I can hear people around when I walk. The iPAQ made my ears ring on the other hand. Can you compare it to anything in your arsenal?
