Default VPN Question - Certificate?

I am trying to connect to my firm's VPN through GPRS on my new XDA. (That's a mouthful!) I have confirmed that my firm's VPN accepts PPP which I understand is the same protocol as the VPN on the XDA. All I want to do is grab my email, perhaps through IMAP4.
My sysadmin. has told me that I need a "certificate" on my XDA to allow me to get in to the VPN. Is this true?
There must be a way of getting my firm's email through GPRS. I used to do it fine through dial-up into the RAS, either through AS or IMAP4. I would hate to think I now can't do it with my XDA.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx

depending on your VPN you will probably need to get a third party client to support it like movian from certicom or look at funk software www.certicom.com/products/movian/movianvpn.html
