Default Toshiba e800 power button not turning machine off

I've been a pretty happy user of my e800 for the last year and a half... up until the other day. I decided to record my daughter's piano recital using the 'Voice Recorder" just for kicks. It recorded fine, but when I went to play it back, the machine did a hard reset and I lost my data.

Oh, well, that kind of thing sometimes happens. But after restoring the device mostly to the way it was, the power button no longer turns the machine off ! It turns the machine on, and holding it down powers the backlight off, but the simple press does not turn the machine off.

I was wondering if anyone knows why this might be the case? I hope it's not a hardware problem, since I rely on the device quite a bit.
