Default Need help to Find original Jornada 680 software and configure Ir port on Laptop

Hello, I'm a new Poket PC Thoughtful Pupil.

I recently got a Jornada 680 from a friend, but he's not sure of finding the sync cable nor the CD's nor the modem cable. I downloaded all the user guides (spanish and english and have read them all, even the addendum) from www.hpjornada.com, and I also dowloaded Active Sync 4.2 (latest version) from Microsoft`s page, and installed it on my Compaq 2500 Laptop (2,4 Ghz, 446 RMb RAM; Win XP, Serial port, Ir port).

Then I wanted to stablish an Infrared connection between both lap and Jornada, but Active Sync does not tell me there is a Ir port in the list (at least until I can configure this port). Then I read in the manual or somewhere (Active Sync's Help perhaps?) that I also need a program for configuring the laptop Ir port, which is apparently within the 2nd. CD shipped with Jornada pocket pc's.

I dis my best and today I spent 4 hours browsing a lot!!! of web pages to see where I could download this program, until I found this nice page Pocket PC Thoughts and I "thought" anyone of you could help me, or send me the exe of this program.

I also want to ask to Pocket Pc Thoughtfull fellows the following: :?:
1) Should I uninstall Active Sync 4.2 and install the older versions (2.0)? I think the only one I could get was this 4.2.
2) How does the modem cable for Jornada 680 like? In one end it is supposed to be an RJ-11 terminal but the terminal connecting to Jornada looks as if a RJ 11 does not fit in this hole. The 680 hole has like a tiny door.
3) User guide says that I cannot use the integrated modem coming with this Jornada in another country different from where it was bought (most likely USA), so what should I do? Should I buy another modem from card ? they say to look in www.hpjornada.com web page to see for models allowed.
4) Someone in a web page (like Ebay) told me he can sell me a Wifi card (Avaya) which works fine in Jornada 680 (he says he has used it). Is it really so? Hava you heard from that?

Well, I gave you a lot of things to try to help me... :D
Thanks,
Gissi

Hi liligis, welcome to PPCT.

I think you would get more responses (and better replies) if you went to a HPC specific site (the Jornada 680 is not a Pocket PC, it's a HPC). Try here for starters.

Thanks, Nurhisham, but I already did!!!! After I said I had been browsin' the Internet for 4 hours, I actually kept browsing over there, and I think all the pages and liks related to Handheld PC`s was visited by me .

I really don't find how to configure my laptop's IR port to connect with my Jornada :( , and now I think that perhaps I made a mistake installing Active Sync 4.2 in my laptop. Well, it was (and is) the only version available at Mcrosoft`s page, but then yesterday night I found where how to download v. 3.5. 3.7 amd 3.8. THe thing is that hen you open Active Sync and try to make a connection by infrared, it tells you to go to Help, and Help instuctions seem to be incomplete, ad worst, they talk about Windows Mobile or Pocket PC's but anything on Handheld PC?s like Jornada!!

I think I will wait fr my friend to find and give the serial syncro cable )or buy it, I found someone selling it) and connect by serial port.

Anyway, I hope someone still can help me here. Thamks again!!
Then I downloaded and I saved the 3.8 exe in my computer, but now I am afraid I could have the same problem I read somewhere (I think it was Chris Herrera´s web page, which consists on the following: when you uninstall Active Sync 4.x and try to instal 3.X, some of the 4.x files keep within in the PC's registry and must be erased before trying to install 3.x. The page gives detailed instructions on how to do so, but I`m not much inclined to touch anything in the registry. You know, I am a simple woman trying tio do my best with the resoiurces I find, but .. the registry is something I never touch without technical support from a computer's specialist.

liligis-
Used a Jornada years ago but did not use IR. I do remember other Jornada users saying they had to do first sync via cable. Then IR was ok to use.

Have you tried asking your questions on their forum? You should be able to find some answers there!

I previously owned 1 x 320LX, 1x 360LX, 2 x 620LX, 2 x 680LX and 1 x 720LX. Went through the old patches and drivers and confirm there were none for the 680LX. I think you may have to consider that the port is defective. That's what happened to 1 x 680LX. The IR simply failed to work.
Is the IR really critical? Its very very very slow. You're better off syncing it via the serial cable instead.
cheers

Default Active Sync is your first issue.

Hello,

I noticed that you had installed Active Sync 4.2. I believe that to be your first issue. Active Sync no longer supported HPCs in version 4.2. You need to roll back to 3.8. You can download the old version on my site, its on the tool bar on the left side of the home page. If this doesn't show your Ir port, check Control panel on your PC. Make sure it is enabled, and then you can select it as a port in Active Sync. Once that is done, make sure you have line of site with the HPC and the PCs Ir port.

If you are still having trouble, let me know. I have an old IBM laptop with an Ir port, and a Jornada 680 that I can setup and do a step-by-step if you need.

Good luck,
