When will anything work with Windows Mobile

After owning almost every type of handheld computer ever made, I have to admit to being a bit baffled with the Quality of the integration between OS/hardware and software on my IPAQ 2215.

Much of my software still to this day hangs due to some kind of signalling problems when the machine powers down.

I remember reading an email from someone around here telling some user to basically "get a life" for complaining that their new Windows Mobile PDA didn't work right with their software. (Because it was new technology) Well, this is 6 months later. Does the end-user still need to "Get a life", or is it ok to expect it to work now?

I can't run a simple app like Wisbar, because every time I run it, it hangs.

I owned a 802.11 CF card for my Jornada. When I bought the IPAQ 2215 it wouldn't work. No drivers. 6 months later, still no drivers. So, I went out and bought a Linksys. The blips I read about it led me to believe that it would work. It didn't. I finally found some drivers from another company that makes the device work. What's going on here?

I emailed Laridian about Pocket Bible, and they tell me that there is nothing they can do to get their software working with Windows Mobile. It is a bug in the OS that causes the program to hang after power-downs. They tell me I should shut down the program when I'm done using it. (Interesting concept)

We wouldn't take this crap with our desktops. I don't know why we need to with our PocketPC's. Evidently this market is moving so fast that us end-users are just a bunch of gunea pigs.

I'll put up with it because I love handheld technology in general. But, I still find it baffling. Possibly, the hardware manufacturers figure that whatever we buy will be out of date in 6 months anyway, so why bother fixing anything. That's the only thing I can come up with. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense to me that a manufacturer of a common device like a CF 802.11 card would just not bother to fix their drivers, and a company like Hp would just not bother to come out with a ROM update to fix the power problems.

The IPAQ 2215 is the most beautiful handheld I've ever owned, and yet the least reliable handheld I've ever owned. Heck, the Atari Portfolio worked with less restarts. <g>

What version of WisBar are you running? You are aware that there are different versions for WM2003, right? Running the wrong version on WM2003 will cause it to hang, if not causing the whole PDA to hang.

I also have Pocket Bible, but I always close it down before turning the unit off... Color me anal, but I try not to leave anything running (besides Snoopsoft Dashboard...but its always running...) on my device when I turn it off. The device saves any open document before shutdown, and I may not necessarily want that to happen. So I save it with the name that I need and then close it down, but more often than not, simply close the app down after saving...

When I am using PocketBible at our study group I have to disable the automatic power off, otherwise PB misbehaves if I have to restart.

Most of the problems I see with WM2003 on my iPaq 5550 are to do with restart after power down.

MS Reader doesn't manage to successfully re-open a book on a SD card (Main memory or File Store is fine) after a restart.

Pocket Bible doesn't work correctly. In fact almost any application that resides in part or completely on an SD card will not behave reliably after a power-off.

The widely reported alarm problem is related to this as well.

It seems that the iPaq SD interface is slow to initialise, causing applications to flag it as unavailable on restart. This surely should be possible to fix, though it does seem to be unique to HP iPaq.

I've tried pelmar's and the so-called Advanced version, always using the Windows Mobile versions. They both hang eventually. I always install it on Internal.
