Default Quick iPAQ 3835 ROM upgrade question

Hiya. I have a quick question about upgrading the ROM on my iPAQ 3835. I've read conflicting reports about being able to restore from a backup afterwards - some say you CAN do it, some say you CAN'T.

Which is it? Has anyone here suffered any ill effects by doing so?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tim

Thinking back to when I did it I beleive that the Compaq web site said that backups taken pre ROM upgrade are not compatible with the post upgrade ROM.

Whenever I did did a ROM upgrade or EUU I always figured that the best thing to do would be to backup my data somewhere and reinstall my apps one at a time. That way any "junk" from the old ROM/registry would not be restored over the new ROM

Hope this helps
Anthony

Yeah, I'd also have to say that I've always reinstalled my apps and then synced my data. I never really attempted to restore a backup after ROM upgrade, so I guess we've all just taken Compaq's word for it. I sure with there was a way for ActiveStink to just remember all of your settings and apps, and then sync them onto the iPaq.

Hi.

When installing a new ROM on ANY Pocket PC, you should NEVER restore a backup taken before you upgraded your ROM over the new ROM.

Many of the back up programs can backup part of the devices system files with all of your programs. Restoring these system files over the top of your new ROM will cause device instability.

You should ALWAYS reinstall all of your applications from scratch after a ROM upgrade.

I hope this helps! Hope everyone (who is...) has a great Father's Day!

Kind Regards,

Christopher Spera

Thanks for the responses! I've got so much crap on my iPAQ that I've been wary about upgrading so I tried taking the easy way out. Looks like that's not gonna work, though.

Ah well, at least this will give me the opportunity to clean things up a bit. Thanks again.
