Default PPC 2003 to iPaq 39xx & 54xx, 19xx left in the cold...

There's an ongoing review of Pocket PC 2003 on http://www.inges-pda.net/blogg.html. Today Inge announced that HP will be releasing PPC 2003 upgrades for their iPaq 3900 and 5400 series, but not their 1900 series

That probably means there will be a 32 MB ROM min. for upgraders.

No mention of an upgrade for the 38xx series - they also come with 32MB of ROM.

Maybe you'll need an x-scale processor as well?

If you remember the 3600 upgrades, there was a great deal of concern regarding what would fit and would not fit in the 16MB ROM the 3600's used. A number of enthusists from a number of different sites voiced their concerns in this regard; and suggested a number of different combinations for what should have been included in ROM and what should have been a RAM upgrade.

I think in order to stem that debate from resurfacing, the 32MB ROM limitation may have been introduced. I could be wrong, tho. This is just a guess...

I do believe that eventually, read the NEXT update, 395x's will no longer be included. I really think that the ROM will exceed the 32MB limit in the 3950's and 3955's, meaning a 48MB ROM will be required.

however, I wouldn't be surprised if the 5450/55 is dropped from updates AFTER PPC 2003. There are so many issues with Wi-Fi in this unit. I have no idea if they ARE in fact all driver and memory related; or if there is some hardware based constraint contributing to the problem(s).

Its just a fact of life unfortunately... At some point, all devices will be dropped from active support. I AM surpised to see the 1910 dropped from this update. I really thought HP might try to give customers the update they were asking for.

Kind Regards,

don't count on an update for the 3800. they don't sport an XScale processor and wouldn't benefit from the updates anyway. (at least that is my understanding of the tech details behind PPC 2003... An XScale processor is required this time.)

the 3800 is 2x over obsolted (3900's AND 5400's). Hoping for an update for them is a pipe dream in my opinion. I hope I'm wrong; but I'll really be surprised if HP comes up with a 3800 PPC 2003 Update.

No kidding!

I'm of two minds about this. On the one hand, I don't care, because I'm going to get a new Pocket PC once the new ones come out this summer anyway.

On the other hand, this seems like a bad deal for 1910 owners. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but this machine has been out for less than a year! Talk about instant obsolescence :devilboy: . Also, this will probably seriously impair the retail value if I want to re-sell the 1910. Heck, even if I give it to one of my family members or friends, I'd like to be able to upgrade it with the latest software.

(On the other hand [I think I'm up to, what, three hands now?], I'm pretty happy with PPC 2002. I haven't had any problems with it, and it does what I want it to do. So maybe this chasing after the latest and greatest is an illusory quest.

Nah. )

*IF* there is an update for the 38xx series, is there anything significantly different from the 376x that would prevent an upgrade for these units?

Tell me about it! The iPaq 1915 became available in Denmark 2 weeks ago    !

I know exactly how you feel  I'll be getting the new iPaq through a friend of mine who's going to the states this summer. I'm happy with my 1915 as it is, but that kind of fades away when I know there's something better out there...

I really hope HP come out with a PPC 2003 upgrade, or at least have the decency to give us an explanation why they put PPC's on the marked without an upgrade for the OS that's released 2 weeks later :devilboy: I mean, it's not like they didn't know...

For everything I've heard (and BTW, I'm a Jornada owner), PPC2003 is not going to be a significant change from PPC2002, it'll just be, as my friend put it, "PPC2002 done right". So unless there's a major change (and not just a new name with some bug fixes behind it) - and I mean major - I don't see how it's going to be a big deal.

But I forget the company I'm surrouned with sometimes - people who want

This sucks big time. I got my 3850 1yr and 3months ago and spent $1200 CAD on it (other than a nice collection of sleeves etc). I do not find that an upgrade will not follow justifiable together with no upgrades for the 1900 series iPAQ's.

These pda's do not cost $99 like the Zire so I DO expect to get an upgrade.... :devilboy:
