Hey Guys, I have a Ipaq 3800 that I have basically just used as a PDA with some fun games. I recently had eye surgery that requires that I be down in bed, face down for the next couple of weeks. I'm trying to get my 3800 configured so that I can run my Compact Flash modem with it. I know with all of your wireless guys out there that this is probably a pretty simple issue. It was up and running about 15 months ago when I bought the modem, played with it for a few weeks, and then really did not need it with my lfie and work.
Today I find myself on my stomach and needing (read wanting) to get online, but just cannot do that with my laptop. The modem has worked, is working, but I cannot get the darn configuration to work right with the Ipaq. The problem is with START>CONNECTIONS>DIAL>DIAL PATTERNS. I just need to dial a local number and I will be set, but the dial patterns or something seems to keep adding the area code or a "0" to the dial string. I've tried all kind of things and even got it connected once today, but could not replicate that. I am limited with being up as I am only allowed to be up a few minutes each hour. Any suggestions would be great!
If anyone can help, I'd be grateful. This is being written with a huge bandage over one eye so please forgive the errors.
Click on Start, settings then connections to open up the connections manager.
At the bottom click on dialing locations. Then click the tab "dialing patterns". Delete all the prefixes and replace them with G to override the automatic addition of your country prefix code (zero in your case) to the number you dialled.
Viola! Problem solved... you should now be able to dial up normally to your ISP/GPRS. Just remember that if you dial any long-distance numbers you'll have to enter prefixes in manually... which most people do anyway.
First, thank you for your quick reply. I had tried your suggestion earlier, but had not replace all the prefixes in "dialing patterns" with the letter "G". I followed your suggestion, even did a soft reset after several tries of not getting it successful. Even adding the "G" to each of the slots: local, long distance and international, when I go to make a connection, an extra
"+0" is added to my local number. My am I bummed as I thought that you had hit on the solution, but I am still getting the additional +0, with all the settings set to "G".
Ok here are a few things to try. An I assume that you are using PPC2002 and not Windows Mobile 2003.
First open contacts, then go to Tools | Options... | And set the area code to the area code you are in.
Do you have a GSM phone? The +0 looks like a prefix for a GSM phone to my eyes.
You may want to go back and recreate the modem connection.
If you go to Start (menu) | Settings | Connections (tab) | Connections (icon) | Dialing Locations |
Is the area code set to your local area code?
Is Country code set to 1?
Is Disable call waiting unchecked?
Tap Dialing Patterns...
you should see
G
1FG
011,EFG
Tap OK
Tap Connections (tab)
Tap Modify....
You may see something like My Connection, or a modem name, is there more than one listed?
Tap on the name
Tap Next
Is the Country code set to 1
Is the area code set to your area code?
Tap next
Are there any commands listed in the Extra dial-string modem commands: box?
Thanks so much for your clear and careful suggestions. I am up for my 20 minutes so wanted to drop you a note. I followed them item by item and VOILA was able to connect. That is according to my PDA, which is running PPC2002. I can also hear on another line that it is connected due to the "chatter-static" on the line.
My only remaining problem now is that Internet Explorer is not recognizing the connection and I cannot surf yet. I am guessing that there is a preference left unchecked or something like that. I have explored it a little bit, but have not been able to come up with anything.
Again, it is at least connected to my ISP, but I'm not yet able to run IE.

Go to Start (menu) | Settings | Connections (tab) | Connections (icon) |
now the center selection should be "Work Settings" (if not change it to that) then tap Modify.. | Proxy Settings (tab) | and check just the top box, "This network connects to the Internet" Everything else should be blank. Tap OK. Change the first setting to Work Settings, and the bottom to Work, tap OK Tap X And Soft reset. You should now be able to surf or active sync, if you have a wireless connection. Also note that from when you tap the first OK to the soft reset you must not go back, or the settings will not stick.

Thanks for the word and the suggestions back. I think you need to go ahead and send me a bill for your retainer fee since you have spent so much time on this. I am grateful, not sure my wife is, though, as she keeps pushing my head down!
Hey man, I followed your suggestion exactly and to a T, but I am not yet connected. I am certain that the changes held when I changed everything to work settings. I am connected to the net, and again, know that I am as the Ipaq tells me that I am, as well as the telephone line sounds.
When I click the icon for IE it goes to its Ipaq home page/screen with the address bar at the top. Regardless what address I input, the error (!) message is always the same: "The page you are looking for cannot be found."
Again, my friend, any ideas would be helpful. If this is getting too bothersome, I understand. I just feel like I am right on the verge of it and just cannot quite get there yet.
Ok try this Start Pocket File Explorer, and if necessary scroll down until you see some white space. Tap and hold on the white space, it will pop up a screen, Check "View All Files" if it is not checked.
Next go to the /Windows folder, and find Welcome, tap on it. It will give you a screen like you have just Hard reset your device, but you haven't. You'll need to go through the screen calibration, again. This will reset some pointers, and may fix your problem.
Can you download a program to your device?

Can you try putting the next line in PIE and see if anything happens.

The litany of thanks continues, as does the search. I don't know where you live, David, Steve I saw that you are in PA. I live in Virginia, but do a good deal of traveling, both domestic and international. This reminds me a little bit like being in Istanbul, Turkey and trying to get visas for different countries like Pakistan, Bhutan or Tajikistan. Sometimes you have to go through one country simply to get a visa for another country. Not that you really want to see Dushanbe in November, but that's where you can get the visa.....
Enough of my ramblings. Okay, the latest status report:

Have recalibrated the screen.
If you are asking can I download programs to my device from my laptop desktop through active sync, the answer is "yes". That is a piece of cake and never a problem. Of course, that is through my notebook and not lying on my face in bed!
I entered: 66.218.71.198 in the address line of PIE. The MS world spun for just a few seconds and then a different screen popped up that gave me the error message that said sorry, the address was not found...although it looked like it was trying to go to Yahoo Help or some other Yahoo site, as those elements did pop up. The page also suggested the I try tapping http://yahoo.com or something close to that to see if that would give me what I wanted. When I did tap on that, then I got the usual error message that the page was not found. However, the screen that came on when I inputed the numbers seemed like a different type of screen. For just a nano second, I thought that we had suceeded!
