Welcome to the world of the PPC :rock on dude!:
What you want to load when you first get your iPAQ really depends on what you are going to use it for. For me, the following are the essentials
1 - Commontime mNotes (for sync to Lotus Notes)
2 - spb Pocket Plus
3 - Laridian Pocket Bible
I'd also consider the following accessories
1 - Memory card for musinc, ebooks, etc (either SD or CF but I'd recommend SD as there are more CF IO devices around at the moment)
2 - A decent case (the slip case that ships with the iPAQ is pretty ordinary) There are some great leather ones and aluminium ones around (just do a search of this site for the word 'case' in the iPAQ discussion group
Good luck

Not sure what you mean but I did buy Pocket Bible and I have three different translations (1 paid for and the others were free) as well as a couple of reference books and some reading guides.
I use it a ,ot as I read a bit each day on the commute to work as well as at church on Sundays

Laridian has some free translations on their site but I think you need to pay for the reader. You can also try Olive Tree (www.olivetree.com/)which is a free reader and has some free translations as well as some that you can pay for.
Hope this helps

For games you can't go wrong with Bejeweled from Astraware. You can try out the original online version (called Diamond Mine) for free at http://www.popcap.com.
If you grew up playing Lucasarts adventure games and still have the disks/cds for them you have to give pocketScummvm a try. It'll take the data files from your games and run them on your ppc. Bonus: You can download Beneath a Steel Sky (cd or flippy disk version) for free at the http://scummvm.org website. Just make sure you read all the documentation.
PocketNester ( http://jetech.org ) allows you to play NES games provided you have the roms.
I'm a new PDA ower/user too, well, that is if you do not count the RIM 857 I use for work... I just got my iPAQ 2215 on July 11. I love it. I've installed mostly Freeware apps and games...
For a list (including links) see... http://marzano.home.att.net/mobile/iPAQ-Software.htm its not everything I currently have installed, but about 80% of it. I plan on having that completely list everything I use with links so I can easily check for updates, tell my friends about a good piece of software, etc.

Tell us what you plan to use it for and then we can suggest applications for it. Besides games, there are thousands of utilities to make your device be more productive for you. In addition to Pocket Plus already mentioned, I find tAgenda invaluable. Also, if you have access to a wireless network, get a WiFi CF card. I like the Socket/Symbol cards the best.
