That's not
quite true. While the older Windows Media Player is not able to display or play files that aren't in the My Documents folder (or its subfolders), File Explorer can show the files if you browse to that directory. So the Pocket PC can "see" the files; it's Windows Media Player that can't see them.
He doesn't even have to move the files using his PC; using File Explorer to move the files from the root to My Documents should allow them to be played. (Of course, if he has a lot of files, using the PC will certainly be more efficient as you can use multiple selection.)
NOTE: I just tested the above on my old 3650. My 3870 can see files in the storage card's root.
