Default iPaq & Battery care & pdf tagging

Hello,

I have an iPaq 4700. I'm worried that the device may be damaged by discharge from its battery if I do not use it for a period of 1 month.

Would data be gone?

Is it true that pdf files need no be tagged if viewed from SD card in the iPaq? My pdf files are not tagged and stored in SD card. I have little problem reading it untagged. Am I missing something?

Hope to hear some replies. TIA.

Regards,
Scoobie

Lithium ion batteries do not like to run completely dead. If you are going to leave the device unused for an extended period, you should either leave it in its charging cradle or remove the main battery. Once the main battery goes dead, you will lose all data stored in RAM so the end effect is the same as just removing the battery. What is stored in ROM (your OS image and items in iPAQ File Store) should be fine since it does not require power flow to maintain itself. Do a complete backup and then store the device with its battery removed. You can restore the backup after the idle month and be back where you left it.

Concerning PDF tagging, most PDF readers (including Adobe's) can open untagged files without a problem. Tagging enhances display flexibility and you can often get better results viewing a PDF file on your device screen if it is tagged, but it is not required in order to open a file on your device.

I have a backup 4705 that I keep in my drawer. Without any memory cards installed the device lasts at least a month between charges. I picked up this device when I sent my original 4705 t PPC Techs for the 128MB upgrade, not knowing how that would turn out actually turned out great!). I have a full compliment of applications loaded on it (mirrors my everyday device) and I even get the occasional alarm.

Since September 2004, I don't think I have charged this device more than 4 or 5 times max. Just looked at it and it's at 32% so I will probably charge it tonight.

On a full charge with no memory cards, you should be fine up to about 30 days. That's one big battery in the 4700.
