Default iPaq 3975 goes haywire after undocking

I have a 3975, which I am BTW extremely disappointed with due to its awful multimedia performance.

Anyway, whenever I undock the unit from its cradle, if I click the Start menu it briefly shows, and then shoots over to a new Contacts entry. If I click OK on the new Contacts window it returns to the Contacts list. If at this point I close the Contacts list and go back to Today, then click Start again, I am back at the new Contacts entry.
If I press the iTask button (the curving arrrow) it cycles through my open apps rather than opening the iTask bar. It is supposed to only cycle through open apps when it it pressed for 3 seconds.
If I undock and let it sit for awhile, it eventually goes back to normal operation.

Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? There are no other apps running when this is going on.

Thanks
craig
