I just purchased my first IPAQ. Not sure I am going to keep it. I was trying to connect to the internet and the backlight kept turning off so I couldn't see the screen while the modem was dialing. Is this normal? Or is this a defective unit? Thanks.
It's a power saving measure. You can change the setting to suit you: Start, settings, system, then "frontlight" or "backlight", depending on your PPC. It will let you pick if, and how long idle before, you want the backlight to go off when on battery power, and separately when connected to AC adapter.
It's also possible that you have enabled the Automatic backlight control which will turn on/off the backlight automatically by being triggered through a sensor at the top of the iPAQ (just below the microphone)

just press the ipaq menu (the arrow hardware button), tap on the light bulb, and then use the tabs on the bottom to get to the type of backlight (power or battery) that you might need.
