I've read a coup[le reviews about the 5550 prior to buying it, and all said the system volume was very loud. Mine does not sound loud at all, my 2215 sounds much louder, is this a defect in some units? Or are all 5550's plagued with this problem?

they might have been referring to the headset volume. Initially with the 545x the headset volume was very low. HP issued a patch for it that made the volume VERY loud. Might be the same for the 555x units.

In general the external speaker on the 555x series isn't loud at all. I have a 5555 and a 1940, and the latter has a much better speaker in it.
