to make them smaller you can use the resources over at http://www.videohelp.com/ and to play AVI you need Pocket TV or PocketMVP or PocketDivx. You should do some searching for stuff like this.. especially here..

NOTE - I'm guessing it's not Handheld PC (HPC) you mean as this is confusing.. you are more than likely talking about a Pocket PC (PPC). A HPC is different than a PPC.

oh and 32MB card you aren't gonna get much with that... not even enough MP3s. You need about 128MB/hr/movie to get good quality stuff...

Defintially get bigger memory. Not just more but bigger. Have one big card rather than two small cards. Trust Me!

You will not be able to use PocketTV for avi (DivX) files... if you already have the avi files it is a simple case of re-encoding them specifically for the PocketPC... my application of choice for this process is VirtualDUB... its free and can be found with a search on the internet.

As far as files sizes... you will need a larger card than the 32mb one to hold a full movie. In fact you will be hard pressed to put a reasonable quality movie on a 128mb card. I would suggest a minimum size of 256mb or larger.

For players... there are PocketMVP (formerly PocketDivX)... or BetaPlayer which has only recently been released and is currently in beta... you can find both applications at PPCFreewares... You can always use the Windows Media Player to play video but then you would need to encode it with Windows Media Encoder, you can find it at the Microsoft website... The largest file format is probably mpeg with this you would need PocketTV and a much larger storage card.

David, you are a lucky man. There are two apps that have arrived recently that make the whole process so much easier - and they're both free! Look on these fora for PocketDivXEncoder and BetaPlayer.

Of course, if you really are getting a Handheld PC, then the process will be somewhat different. You'll want to use PocketDivxEncoder, but make sure that it doesn't rotate the video, and use PocketMVP (the H/PC version) for playback. (I'm assuming and ARM processor running Windows CE 3.0—if you have CE 4, then there's another specialized build for your device. For earlier CE devices, i.e. CE 2.11, you can use PocketTV to playback MPEG videos, but on the devices I've tried it on the screen produces too many artifacts for pleasurable playback.)
