I miss the note symbol which showed up on the right of your contacts so you can know whether you added extra info about a person. Is there anyway I can know whether I have attached a not to a contact without having to click on the note tab each time? Or will I need special software to allow me to do this?

You most likely need a third-party PIM to support this; although I haven't looked for this feature, I would certainly check out Pocket Informant and Agenda Fusion.
