Default Clie to iPAQ

For me it was a forced transition. My work offers a new iPAQ 4150 or I can buy my own Palm with wireless- so I go for the free iPAQ.

So far- this thing is terrible. I have to reset MULTIPLE times a day, it just locks up (no hacks/patches etc. just commercial software). It doesn't work as an alarm clock, some days it works, somedays it doesn't. I have to shut down and reboot my computer every time I want to sync, and this past weekend had to hard reset because it stopped syncing and the backup program would create an error every time, so no backups either. NEVER had problems hotsyncing my Palms, or backing up- just copied all the files to a memory card and everything was fine. no-can-do on the PPC.

no to mention how terrible pocket word is compared to docs-to-go.

On the plus side, the memory card integration is very smooth. I haven't used PalmOS5 to compare the latest palms, but I do like treating my memory card just like RAM- although, why do I have to use RAM to run progs that are already in RAM? I'm only able to use about 30MB of my onboard RAM and I have to leave the rest to run programs. oh well, 256 card is in the mail.

but I'm not just here to bash, I'm stuck with this thing for better or worse, so I'm trying to find a few things.

1) is there a way to categorize my notes? outlook will categorize them so I was surprised to see I couldn't on my PPC. same with docs, If I put them in subfolders then for some reason word won't see them, so I would like to categorize my docs as well because I have a ton of them.

2) how can I really close programs? I've always heard how nice multitasking was on PPC and how Palm needed to have it... I don't see the benefit so far except I have to constantly go back and close things or it bogs down. I use the iTask feature but I would really like the program to close when I click on the X.

don't flame me for my frustrations, it's just how it is. My palms were nice and sleek and ran just fine and the PPC behaves just like windows98- ie. hard to install/uninstall stuff and crashes all the time. I want to learn how to use this thing well and get past some of this stuff. thanks for any help.

I understand, being a long-time Palm user myself (have a T3 to go along with my 4155). As far as the Close - I use Spb PocketPlus but search Pocketgear or freewarePPC.com - I think there are some free items out there to solve this problem.

Can't help on the notes thing.

As far as Word - get Textmaker. It's really nice, albeit a bit pricey. (Maybe you can convince the office to buy it for you

BTW - the SD card thing - you're right - it is VERY nice. PalmOS5 has not implemented VFS support to this degree (although I hear it's coming in OS6 aka Cobalt)

Hope that helps!

There is something wrong with your setup -- possibly one bad-behaving application. My Pocket PC hasn't locked up in a very long time. I'd do some debugging.

You shouldn't have this problem on the Pocket PC, either. The misbehaving app I alluded to earlier might cause this as well.

Because Pocket PCs architect memory more like desktops.

Not sure off the top of my head -- I think Pocket PC's Notes tool is quite limited. There are third party tools that might supplant this functionality -- try a search.

You should be able to use one level of subfolders under My Documents. Microsoft made a decision not to support sub-subfolders directly, though. You can open those up through File Explorer.

My favorite is Spb's Pocket Plus, although there are free tools, too (like Wisbar, vBar, and others -- try a few searches).

thanks for the help. I've searched for note software, but it's such a generic term it's hard to get results. lots of pocket PC release "notes" on all kinds of software, I'll keep looking though.

I'm gonna try the wisbar and vbar and get back to you.

thanks for the help.
