From a marketing perspective the contest isn't that expensive. It's true that while we've had
some response, it hasn't been what we'd hoped for, but there are some legitimate concerns we've tried to address but with such a short contest it's just coming to an end:
1. The contest is only open to U.S. residents (lots of negative feedback here!) we did this to simplify the tax reporting and we're not 100% clear on how legal it is to export a Dell out of the country commercially because of both U.S. and the recipient's country import and export regulations and electronic device certifications.
2. The wording of the application made some professional artists and photographers afraid that they were giving away their copyright by submitting. Actually this isn't the case (it gives us a non-exclusive right to put the skins on our web site and/or use them in advertisements without paying royalties).
3. More people than we expected were uncomfortable with creating graphics in the first place. Once we realized this, we put together the templates to try to help but it was only in the last week that this was brought to our attention :? ...
4. Some submissions didn't have submission forms and we haven't heard back from the authors. This could be due to some of them being made of copyrighted sources (lots of skins are of the Matrix or Star Trek, for example).
Ah well, cheap lesson for us in contests! This was only the first of many contests we'll be doing. The main difference in the next one is that it will be world-wide if we can get some answers on the tax and import/export issues.
If you've entered already, that's great. If not, there's still a little time...
