Default FirstLoox has been Hacked!

Please be warned. I got an e-mail from the webmaster@firstloox:
Quote:
hi dear : blz singe in my new site because my old site is bad now you can dawnlod the imbortnt program for this link http://members.lycos.co.uk/haady/******.zip
THis zip-file is hosted on a hacked website and contains an .exe (checked on a linux-box to be safe), so i think this is something nasty.

When i go to the website of Firstloox it is reported that the site is hacked and all contents is removed 8O

Jaap

[edit] modified the filename to prevent newbee's from trying it: better safe than sorry!

Hmmm... When I go to the site, the front page has no stories, but it looks like the forums are there. But when I hit the Home link, it shows the "Hacked" message. Hopefully, they can get back up without too many problems...

I got the same e-mail, assumed it was just a spoofed message from one of the latest Bagel virus variants, and didn't pay much attention to it. It's really too bad people feel the need to do this sort of thing. My own site got wiped out several months ago by some hacker exploiting a flaw in PHP-Nuke because I wasn't able to keep up with the almost daily patches to that sloppily-written piece of software.

Hope FirstLoox can get back up and running soon!

Jaap,

You are listed as being online on FirstLoox, can you get to any of the forums?

Yeah,

It makes you look and wonder. I know a lot of boards that would deserve it to be hacked and demolished, but Duncan's certainly is not one of them. A team that works that hard to provide a community running (despite the bad actions regarding devices from Siemens) should not be hit like that, it just is not fair in any way.

On our board (in our first six months) our server crashed and we lost all our data: it was a huge disaster. Firstloox has been on-line for years now, having a steady stream of good articles and good posts. This is dramatic

Isn't there something we can do to help Duncan and his team out?

I wish there was! I guess we need to wait and hear from Duncan about the damage that was done...

Backups are key in situations like this. Many sites that have recently been hacked or experienced database or hardware failures have lost months or even years of history simply because no site backup existed. (Or the backup itself was months or years out of date.)

Anycase I wonder whats in that file he is trying to get people to download. I dont know if they have a store, but if they do, people might want to change their credit card number.
