Default Uh-oh: Placement of Linksys WRT54GS router

I just had a sinking feeling! Can any of you please advise:

* what effect quantitatively placement of a wireless AP & router on a wall behind which metal heating ducting resides will have on wifi range and reliability?

* what type of range those of you using a Socket CF WiFi card with an iPAQ 2200 series PPC have experienced?

We just finished our basement, which includes a sound deadened office. Since I was concerned about the effect the insulation and acoustical tiles would have on my soon to be WiFi network, I had the contractors install an elevated power outlet and dual Ethernet ports at the top of the stairs to the basement (the center of the home). I had a choice of two walls and just now realized the wall on which they are installed has the main ducting for the whole house behind it.
My Socket CF card arrives Fri. and I am now concerned about range throughout our 1900 sq. ft. two-story home.

As always, your thoughts are appreciated.
