Default GPS...Is it a worthy investment?

I am planning to buy a GPS system, because I recently got accepted into George Mason University; and it's a new area up there for me, so I wanted to be able to get around up there.
I am also planning to take a trip to Illinois in the summer, so I will need directions for that as well.
However, the point where I start to second guess my plans of buying GPS is...what next? What then after I use it for my intended purposes? I am wondering how much I will use it...Is it going to sit there and collect dust? I guess this is really user based behavior, eh?
I wanted some other GPS users ideas and ways they (you) use your GPS systems when you're not really making any major road trips. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some reasons to not feel guilty, in the event I buy GPS and second guess that I might not use it as much as I think I will.

Thanks in Advance. :?
