The Window CE Application Manager is ActiveSync (AS) itself ( see for example
http://www.cewindows.net/developer/a...einstaller.htm ).
There can be a lot of reasons for why it refuses to work. Most probably, your PDA isn't connected (the AS icon is gray) and/or there is some other problem that leads to the seeming disconnection of the device. You may reinstall AS and/or check if you plugged in your PDA before first installing AS. Refer to, for example,
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/acti...m#USB%20Issues on this:
"If you are unable to connect with USB, try looking in the Device Manager for an unknown device. If there is one when the Pocket PC is plugged in, then delete the device. Then reboot and try to connect again.
An unknown device will be installed if you plugged your Pocket PC in before installing ActiveSync."
And, there can be hundreds of other reasons for why it refuses to work. The above-linked
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/ has prolly the best AS Troubleshooting Guide series; make sure you scrutinize the articles.
If you can't make AS work at all, you're not lost: you don't always need to use AS to deploy your apps to the PDA. You may want to check out
http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14246 on this.
